You can basically break down internet affiliate marketing in to a few different categories, especially for people who just starting out. Newbies (those new to internet marketing or "IM") will most likely have heard of Clickbank affiliates before any other kind of affiliates. At least, in my vast reading on the internet marketing forums some seem to have little clue of any other affiliate networks, save Clickbank.

There's nothing wrong with Clickbank. Many affiliates make a lot of good money promoting offers on Clickbank. Seems like there are hundreds of thousands of offers there. It's possibly the largest repository of affiliate offers to promote on the internet. Now, who knows if that's true or not and I will not try to verify it but since you always see BS statistics thrown out there such as "97% of internet marketers fail," then I guess I thought I would take a stab at it as well. Regardless of whether or not it's the biggest, it is certainly where a lot of affiliate marketers get their start.

Clickbank affiliates often start with free techniques such as article marketing or forum posting on niche forums to get traffic. I have seen others use pay per click with much success. Now, Clickbank has its own jargon to which you really need to pay attention if you will have any success with them. With so many offers on its database, you will find a lot of websites that simply do not convert for you, as an affiliate. A general rule to follow is to pick those websites with a high gravity score, which in Clickbank terms generally means that product sells well. Also, when checking your stats, instead of "hits" they call them "hops," so you need to look for sites where you can get at least 1 sale per 100 hops.

Clickbank can be a goldmine for some, and a barren desert for others. Just be sure you are smart about it and you can be one of the top Clickbank affiliates.

Paydotcom, while not as big, is another site that has a lot of offers from which you can pick and choose, similar to Clickbank. I have my own affiliate program there for my product, and was attracted to Paydotcom because the fees are less costly than Clickbank's fees.
