Making good money with EPN isn't as easy as it was several years ago, but it's still a goldmine. When I first got into it, I built a bunch of BANS sites which would do pretty well then get deindexed or buried. I tried phpBay as I thought maybe the problem was BANS. Same thing happened.
The problem was me. Google got sick of "thin affiliate sites" and changed their algorithms and review procedures to eliminate sites that were devoid of content and filled with affiliate links. At about the same time, ranking for a general category, even for longtails got pretty difficult. My "motorcycles" site would get buried. My "Triumph Speed Triple" site did well.
It's a winning formula. Build a blog, target a good, tight niche, get traffic with solid content and decent backlinks. Add good blogroll entries or rss feeds so all your outbound links aren't affiliate links. When you have monetizable traffic volume, add phpBay - sparingly. Less is more. Google seems to tolerate 6 EPN affiliate links pretty well. Create some product pages using phpBay, and add relevant a relevant phpBay tag to your blog posts - this part is critical - after a <!--more--> tag. Why? If your index page displays 5 posts, and there's 6 EPN links per post displayed, that's 30...google won't like that. If the phpBay code is after the <!--more--> tag, they'll only be displayed on the page for the blog post. My favorite technique is to create a post or page about why "niche item whatever" is good, and put phpBay at the bottom so people who read the paragraph or two then get to see 6 of them they can buy right now on ebay.
My EPN EPC is about $.25 lately, which is pretty respectable, and I have about a 15% ctr, also respectable. I consider a site that averages 30 visitors a day a "failure," but even a failure can generate $30 a month at those numbers. 10 failures is a good chunk of a car payment
Success is sweet, though. By repeating the process the odds are good you'll find one that breaks through. You might not guess that a blog targetted to replacement heads for electric toothbrushes or a particular brand of vegetarian dog food could earn $500 a month in EPN commissions, but those are exactly the kinds of things that bank. How many blogs like that would it take to change your lifestyle?
