You hear people talk all the time about keyword research and whether or not keywords are profitable enough to try and attain. Unfortunately, a large majority of new marketers don't really look at all of the factors that go into deciding whether a keyword is good or not.

One of the most important things that I do when I am deciding on a keyword or not is to take a look at exactly what kind of pages are ranking for the keyword in question.

Are they authority sites?
Are they Blogs?
Are they Squidoo Lenses?
Are they articles in directories?
Are they videos?

If you can find articles, videos, blogs, squidoo pages, or any other type of site like that, it is often just a matter of outworking that person to take their spot.

Honestly, there really is no special trick or magic bullet that is going to get you that number one ranking, despite what so many sales pages tells you. The key is consistency, which is true with just about anything that we do both online and offline.

This brings me to my next point and something that is very important and should be payed attention to.

When building links to your site, article, or other web property, it is important to do things as consistently as possible. What I mean by this is don't just blast out 1000 backlinks in a day and then pray for the best. What you should do instead is build links at a consistent clip each and every day. By doing this you make the popularity of your site seem more natural in the eyes of the search engines. Too many people think that they can do it all in one day - then wonder where they went wrong.

    Howdy Jeremy,

Fantastic article. I do thing the natural way in order to get backlinks. Posting at least htree times a week to train the search engines. Comment on blogs, use forums ect.
When doing my keyword search I also use the same methode you use. I also tak it a step further to see the Alexia ranking and the sites keywords. then I taylor my plan from there.
