For those of you struggling with setting up a portal, or hesitant to offer web services, think niche. I will give you one basic scenario here, but it can be applied to many niches within your city.

Auto Classifieds.

There are tons of software out there that you can upload to your server and start you on your way. You can literally be up and running from SCRATCH in about 4 hours.

Most small used car lots in town do not have sites, and the ones that do...usually suck pretty bad. About 5% show up on page one in google, so the arena is wide open.

Start a massive listing service. Get your site up and running and find one lot to allow to use the site for free. They will upload their stock of vehicles with pics and descriptions right to your site. Get your site showing well in the search engines, then draft up a nice letter to send out and include some screenshots of your site and a testimonial from your (free) customer.

I live in a little town of 40K people, and we have over 35 used car lots. 29 of them do not have websites or websites that have their invenotry on them.

You can alos offer a video service as an upsell where you video the vehicles and submit those to popular sites. Stand alone pics are good too, but most dealerships have the ability to take their own pics.

How much? How does $70-$150 a month sound? Multiply that times 20+ lots, and you have yourself a nice sustainable income...from just one site in one city. You can expand this as well to include an "area" or county.

The software ranges from free to a couple hundred dollars, so one sale pays for it! NOW, once you have them hooked as customers, you can also help them with their marketing...for a fee of course.

Just a thought.
