I have noticed that longer pages with more words are doing better in Google search rankings.

And it is true word count by itself does not guarantee a high ranking. There are many factors involved. If you get high PageRank backlinks that seems to still be more powerful than words.

That is: a 50 word page supported by multiple PageRank 5 backlinks, will outrank a 500 word page....
