Public relations and marketing are not the same, though people often use the terms interchangeably and the two do overlap. Public relations can be viewed as a way to establish your business as a viable part of your community, rather than a way to accrue sales. Although establishing positive public relations will most definitely lead to an increase in business and sales. An example of public relations would be if a sporting goods business sponsored a basketball tournament complete with t-shirts and a season-finale picnic for local children from low income families. In addition to showing your sincere concern and care for the children in your community, your business would receive exposure by local media as the tournament and picnic are announced.
In recent months, with the downturn in our economy, many stable businesses have created a great public image when offering free services to those who have lost their jobs. You’ve probably taken note of the businesses in your area that have offered free haircuts, free resume’ services, or that are collecting business attire for those who are looking for jobs. Chances are good that you will remember the names of those businesses and make it a point to buy from them. They are reaching out to the community and you want to be a part of that.
