Like in any form of sales, you need people to trust you. Are people going to trust you right off the bat when they hear what you have to say or when they first interact with you? No.

You first have to convince people that you have something to offer. Do this by supplying content or by being knowledgable. People want to get involved with other people that know what they are doing and who know how to be successful. Be of value that people can see and the will flock to you.
