The fragmentation of Android OS is one of its most distinctive features, and it requires designing and developing mobile applications for various screen resolutions, processor capabilities and operating system versions. Generally it's a problem concerning software development. It's not the problem of the owner of the platform, it's the problem of software developers that have to adjust their products. On the other hand, the openness that led to this fragmentation, allowed Android to become the leader on the worldwide market.

Let's take a brief look at this fragmentation. The older Android versions are gradually abandoned in favor of versions 4.0 and higher, and that's a healthy sign for the OS. As for screen resolutions, the diversity of Android devices comes down to the most popular smartphones/phablets/tablets. Nobody needs to cover every single device. The major ones are used for testing and are chosen by the software owner. Scalable applications are getting better, and users win anyway, with the widest choice of devices and apps.

The growing market power of Android leaves no doubts that it's worth developing for. Furthermore, there's nothing that good designers and developers couldn't tackle, with all the tools available.

And if you are an Android designer, take a look at a small cue card made by our design team. It's created for understanding of Android screen resolution fragmentation and calculating DPI. As you know, not only must designers consider the screen sizes in their work, but also the DPI measure. We hope it will come in handy in work and save your time.
