YouTube - How Can I Avoid Failure?

Worried that your product will tank? Okay, make a mini-product and sell that at a lower price first. For example, you want to record a DVD with 2 hours of "how to make a web site" videos. But that means you'll have to do all the work of scripting two hours of video, possibly have to re-record certain lessons, make a DVD menu and CD art... get a company to burn the DVDs, package and mail them...

That sounds like it could be a lot of work, and possibly lots of money as well. So to minimize the risk, make a mini-product first. Record five video lessons, each just five minutes in length. Put them on a web site in Flash video format so people can view them in a browser.

What you're trying to accomplish by this is gauge the interest. Put the 5 videos on a hidden web page, and sell access to the page for $10 or $15 each. You can show the first video as a demo so people can see what they're getting. If there's enough interest, then you can work on your DVD series and upsell some of your existing customers to the DVD series.

Even better -- don't make it a DVD series at all! That's the cool thing about the Internet, is that you can get away without very many operating costs. It's way more cheaper and automatic to simply add more videos to your protected member area people go to after purchasing. You could start the member area with the five videos for $15, then slowly add more videos and increase the price. Eventually you might have five hours worth of stuff for $97.
