Writing samples…you must have them at some point if you’re going to apply for writing jobs. So what if you don’t have any writing samples yet or you don’t have anything that relates to the jobs you’re applying for? There are a few options:

If you don’t have any writing samples:

1.) Create a writing sample. I’m always amazed at how people balk at this idea. You do want to write don’t you? So why is a mock piece such a big deal? It’s true you’re not getting paid for it but it could lead to some great paying job, so it really can lead to money.


If you have no idea what to write about, find something you enjoy or something that is similar to the field you are applying to and write a piece as if you are a journalist covering it for the paper. Make sure your lead stands out. Break the middle up of the story into to clearly discernible chunks and wrap it up with a conclusion. Use the inverted pyramid if you wish.
