Importance of Nicheing

The last few days, I have talked to people who were not necessarily invovled in marketing either offline or online. Both gave me some advice that I had to turn down. They both told me to stop looking to address my niche and expand to the general public. One person said that if you expand to the general public you can make enough money to fund your foreays into your small niche.
The suggestion made sense to the two people, and it used to make sense to me in the past. Why focus on a small group when there is so much more money in the larger group? Why leave all of that money on the table? A few years back I was making some traction in my niche. And becase of that success in the niche, I actually was growing in a more general niche. However, I though, why not ignore my specialized niche and go for the big prize? I started to do it, and I almost immediatley lost my standing in my specialized niche. For that reason, I lost my standing in the more general niche I was attempting to address. In the end, instead of owning my specialized niche and growing in the general niche, I lost out in both. I immediatly dropped the idea and went back to what I was doing. And I came back to where I needed to be.
What this taught me is that large general niche's can be difficult for those of us whow are still learning the process to crack. However, dominating a specialized niche is not that hard at all. In addition, the specialized niche converts better as the people are more likely to want what you are offering. Finally, paradoxically, growth in the general niche may even come from your domination of the specialized niche.
In the end, become king of your specialized niche. Then become content as a prince who might one day be king in the general niche. Becuase if you try to take the throne to soon, you may lose everything.
