Step 1: Using the Right Tool
To do keyword research, first you need to download a free keyword tool such as this one and plug in your targeted keywords ideas. For example, if you are in dating niche, you can first type in the word 'dating' and you will get keyword ideas like "online dating", "personal dating", "adult dating", "dating services", "Asian dating" out of the keyword tool.
Step 2: Check your keywords and see if they have a potential
After you've got the keyword ideas, you should also check in Google for example and see how many people are actually bidding on these keywords. If there are numerous people who are bidding on the keywords (the right hand side listing you see in Google), the better. It basically tells you that many people are willing to spend money on the products or services that you are looking to advertise online.
Step 3: Run a test PPC ad and see if they converts
You may have listened to a concept called "the long tail theory". It means the longer the keywords are, the more qualified traffic you will get. Well, to me it is a theory. To make sure that the keywords are converting for you （either sales or leads), you need to run a test PPC ads and see if you can get sales or leads from them. If they don't convert that means the keywords could be less qualified for your businesses. You have to repeat the whole process until you have found some keywords that are working for you.
(Note: The above statement is a simplified version of how to run a successful PPC campaign. Because keyword research is just a first step, you still need to write a compelling ad, design a good landing page with compelling copy writing before you can convert your visitors in to leads or sales. Therefore, I make an assumption of you do have a compelling ad or landing page that cause the visitor to want to buy or subscribe your list immediately).
