I wrote articles about topics I was passionate about and used those as my first 'samples.' It was relatively easy to land my first gig using those.

Met Creative Director of international agency in LinkedIn group.
He liked my attitude, organized an "informational" with the local branch (Melbourne, Australia) of the agency he represented.
Turned informational interview into job opportunity using Ramit Sethi style techniques.
Did 3 month internship / contract there, worked with Fortune Global 500 brands.
Leveraged that experience to land Elance clients.
Referrals, more Elance clients, ongoing work, etc.
Made website, made infographic.
Send infographic (with customizations depending on recipient) sales letter out to agencies and businesses all the time, with a link to my site.
More clients, more referrals, more ongoing work, etc.

All the client seeking strategies in the world are on this forum, in The Well-Fed Writer, on any good podcast...

Just take action and stop askin' son.

I went around to local businesses and introduced myself and asked them if getting new clients was their biggest problem.... most said yes.

After they said yes, I would proceed to tell them I could help them get new clients with my copywriting and if I did, would they consider taking on my services full time.

Most said yes, and others were afraid. I mentioned there was no fee upfront. If they saw results, then we would talk about a full-time copywriting gig for their business.

The ones I manged to get results for were more than happy to hire me, because results paved the way for me and built my credibility with them. All in all, going out there and offering your help can open doors. Hope I helped :-)

I think I probably said this a hundred times before, but Elance or Odesk or whatever job platform you find online is really a great start. People tend to loose interest and motivation if they don't find work instantly but you just have to try long enough and not loose your hope.

True

Freelancing is a great way to start! But also, what copywriterco said is really inspiring. In the end, being a copywriter means dealing with people and with people's needs. Wherever there's a need, you'd have to be there.
