How hard is copywriting

Copywriting is the art and science of persuading in writing. It is a field that combines several skills including writing, marketing, psychology and a large dose of common sense.

Is it harder than coding?

They are two different things but learning how to create an application in C++ tends to take more time than learning how to write a sales copy. However, it is not a fair comparison as they are two different things and the last time I've coded something, I was 12. And it was in BASIC.

However, what I can tell you is that it takes a lot of effort to actually "get it". Years? Maybe not, but a safe bet would be 500 hours of intense practice and studying to have a clean understanding of the basics and know what you are actually doing.

Copywriting is difficult thing. You should understand what your audience wants and try to convince them, that they really want something to buy. It's the main idea.
You don't need inspiration, you have to be just professional, because selling text isn't poetry or classical novel, and you aren't Pushkin or Dickens

NAH, much simpler than code-ing Or SEO. Anyone can write, right?

Just do it. You are in the right place at the right time to learn a few things, find out which one book to read, and you are ready to hang your shingle out.

Look around, lots of examples here. So, come on in, the water is fine.

Copywriting is work like anything else, and when the deadlines are insane, or your dealing with a frustrating client who changes their direction (but of course not the deadline), or your brain just doesn't want to engage that day, it can be HARD work. But you will be a good, successful copywriter, and enjoy the work only if:
1. You really enjoy writing (really enjoy it)
2. You know how to sell/persuade/motivate

There are techniques and best practices to good copywriting that have been developed over the years based on testing. You need to learn those. There are lots of people offering hyped up courses like "Become a Rockstar Ninja Copywriter and Make $10,000 a Week!" and such. You can spend your money on one of those and pretty much learn the same thing you could have from some basic "How To" books. Of course there's a lot more than technique and desire, such as how do you get experience to get work (people don't hire copywriters without a portfolio), what kind of copywriting do you specialize in (SEO, email, direct mail, marcom, etc.).

My question is why do you want to be a copywriter? Is it because you heard you can make good money? (You can). Or is it because you love to write and like the marketing business? If you're just looking for another way to make money, you may be surprised at how hard it can be and you may not succeed. In fact, I once hired a journalist, someone who was used to high-pressure newsrooms, to write copy and she quit the job in tears and frustration. I'm not trying to discourage you; I've had a successful copywriting career for over 25 years and really enjoy it.

You ask this question like your ordering a topping for ice cream. Those other things you mentioned and copywrting are completely different animals.

To become a real copywriter you have to put in thousands of hours of studying, training, writing, testing, failing, and succeeding. You don't just wake up one day and say..."Geez Betty, I think today I'm gonna be a copywriter."

I remember seeing Gary Halbert at a Ted Nicholas event and he said something along the lines that he loves the feeling of being a copywriter and knowing he could lose everything be flown anywhere in the United States. Be dropped down and know because of his copywriting knowledge in this brain he could become a millionaire all over again.

I've just interested in copywriting recently and I think it's really difficult. It's paid much but it's also take much time. A PR writing have few hundreds words but you have to know products clearly. Moreover, you must have abudant vocabulary not to repeat word many times.

Copywriting itself is not the hard part. Learning to align your goals with your level of dedication is.you need to master the art of writing copy. But meanwhile, you've got to tackle your self-doubts and ramp up your motivation.

Copywriting is an art. SEO is a science. There is no comparison. If you have a flair for words and persuasion, it is easier.

Copywriting is much harder to learn than coding.

You could probably grasp the basics of copywriting faster than you could coding, but to truly master copywriting is a process that takes years and years. To master coding is a year or two at most, depends on your dedication.

I think you're taking the wrong approach here in terms of thinking which one is harder. If you don't have a love for persuasion and salesmanship, you'll never make it past the average level of copywriting.

They are both pretty easy to "get started."

There are millions of "Programmers." Only a tiny fraction of these have invested the thousands of hours, money and effort to really become "experts."

Likewise, there are millions of people that would consider themselves "Copywriters." Only a tiny fraction have invested the thousands of hours, money and effort to really become "experts."

They both require a lot of investment "up front" to become an "expert." Then, there is at least a few hundred hours each year of ongoing study to hone your skills.

The downside to learning "Programming" is things change so rapidly... You could be an "expert" in a "hot" technology..... In five years, the demand has evaporated... and now you must invest hundreds of hours to master a "new hot" technology. It is a treadmill you'll never be able to get off...

I do not like comparison that things are more hard. My children asked often, who is stronger, crocodile or elephant, Superman or Captain America.

The problem is every thing is hard in it is own way. And you choose the difficulties that are closer to you. You like to sell? Oh, yes, copywriting is hard, but it's good for you.
Do you like to solve logic tasks? Ok, copywriting it`s good, but code-ing is better for you.

Copywriting is easy to learn, but way difficult to master. You can study and learn the "rules" and best practices, which makes you technically capable of writing. But to actually get your audience to respond the way you want, that takes a long learning process. Consider also that copywriting deals with a moving target (i.e. the beliefs, perceptions, worldviews, and behaviors of your audience is always changing) and you're trying to learn a skill that is always in flux.

IMO, copywriting is hard when you don't know where to start and what type of audience are your trying to reach. Copywriting is used to persuade potential clients and to raise brand awareness.

Well.. if you like the topic and you feel confident about it - it's a piece of cake. When you write about something you're not really strong about - it's hard. But look on the bright side - you ALWAYS learn something new
