From Marcom to Copywriting

Please forgive my ignorance, but I want to understand the difference between obtaining a Marcom certification and working as a Copywriter?

Can anyone recommend a good copywriting course online that will not break the bank? I am trying to open up more doors in freelance writing for myself and I am still a bit unsure what the differences are between these two titles.

Thanks for your time.

There are great copywriting threads right here on the forum that are free. That is good place to start.

You can command high copywriting fees even
without any certification or degrees as long as
    your copy brings in sales.

Check out courses by John Carlton. That's the
best place to start learning copywriting.

Or, if you really can't invest. Here's what to do:
    Become an apprentice.

The best way to learn is by doing.

Go over the Warriors services forum and see if there's
    any copywriter offering their services.

Approach them and tell them that you would like
to learn copywriting and that you can offload some
    of their burden for free.

Yes, help them write copy for free.

They will show you what you did wrong and how to
    improve your copy.

If you cannot afford John Carlton's Simple Writing System, try either one of these two very good copywriting courses...

Robert Bodoch (Warrior) has a copywriting course available for just $37 ...

Or you could try another brilliant Warrior copywriter who enjoys a lot of respect here, Paul Hancox...

      Does this help?

Hi Guys: First thank you for all your help. BUT, no one answered my question. What is the difference between writing Marcom and being called a copywriter? Are they the same animal?

          They're very different terms, Joyce.

"Marcom" is a far broader term which includes advertising, public relations, sales promotion, online marketing in its widest sense, sponsorship, publicity, branding, graphic design, packaging, promotion, marketing consultancy, and so on.

"Copywriting" refers specifically to the writing of copy for sales purposes.

          Marcom / marketing communications. Copywriting / salesmanship-in-print.

In a loose sense, yes, they're the same animal.

Dear 247copywriter: I clicked the link to Robert Bodoch's advertisement and there is no link to order the book or course or anything. I have searched the web and I am not sure where to go since he has many affiliates selling his course. I would rather buy from him directly. Can you help me?

It doesn't cost any more to buy digital products through an affiliate, Joyce.

I don't know about this product, but some vendors sell only through affiliates (which suits them, because many serious affiliates won't promote a product for which the vendor has another sales-page, anyway, for the obvious reason that you've just drawn attention to.)

          Hiya Joyce...

Did you not click on the blue link at the bottom of his WSO?

If you had done so, it would have taken you to this page...

          Order Page (Non Affiliate Link)

From there you can click on the link to buy it.

I hope this helps you out and is what you're looking for. Bought it myself a couple of years ago, pretty darn good at this price and with the one year training thrown in, you can't go wrong. Robert is also an ever such a nice chap to talk to, very helpful indeed.

          Kindest regards,

          Sally

Well first, a Marcom certification would open more doors especially internationally than street copywriting as I like to call it. There isn't much any difference in the copywriting aspect except for the fact that some firms will ask you about your writing experience and if you are Marcom certified on your curriculum, obviously the employer will take that into account and will accept pretty much any reasonable salary you ask for just because you did many other things than just write.

If you just claim to be a copywriter with no certification, the employer may not accept the salary you propose getting started with until you proved yourself and even then...You'll need to really sell yourself to him, but if you're a good copywrite, you shouldn't have a problem convincing him or her to try you out.

    Take care,
