Dan Kennedy's Poor Copy v. Great Copy

Check this out:

DAN KENNEDY’S “GOLD” CERTIFICATION, WRITING FOR INFO-MARKETERS:

This promotion is kinda like a box of old-time Cracker Jack. There's a toy inside.

The first page is PATHETIC. I can't see how it slipped by the folks at AWAI. (To add insult to injury, the order form copy is in need of an overhaul as well. But at least they have one!)

HOWEVER--go ahead and click on the "CLICK HERE FOR A MESSAGE FROM DAN" and you'll read/see the master at work.

It's a treat.

- Rick Duris

PS: I didn't mess up the title tag. It came that way.

Thanks for the share. I recently was very kindly given one of Dan Kennedy's books and it is fantastic. It's amazing to come into something thinking you're going to learn in some way where you're separated from the actual material, and you end up finding yourself completely pulled in (does that make sense?)!

It's like when I first discovered the Gary Halbert Letter... I'm not a copywriter so I went into it just curious, thinking I'd skim over a bit of it and not really find it too relevant. Next thing I knew, I had finished reading 2-3 of the letters in their entirety and lost track of what time it was! :p

Anyway, I really respect the work that copywriters do. The power of words is incredible.

I read here recently someone thought Dan Kennedy was a mediocre copywriter, if not a hack. I disagree. - Rick Duris

PS: It's unfortunate they buried Dan's piece in that promotion.

It's a good thing that good sales material is measured by SALES instead of opinions, isn't it?

      REALLY?

      Wow.

I couldn't disagree with them more.

I've seen a few JV type of promotions that Dan was involved in that were obviously not his writing style.

But some of Dan's stuff, especially earlier in his career is brilliant. His Georgio (aka "Your Romance Director") Restaurant DM series is one of my all-time favorites.

These days, most of the Glazer-Kennedy stuff is written by Bill Glazer or one of their in-house copywriters. IMHO, Dan's role in Glazer-Kennedy has become more of a content producer and seminar speaker than in-house copywriter for their own marketing.

Other than Jay Abraham, I can't think of any other 20+ year marketing guru with as many hits or raving fans as Dan Kennedy.

There's a debate going on my discussion board about "clean design" vs. "clunky design" with your copy, and how it can or cannot affect response rates.
I'm talking about odd layouts, inconsistent typestyles, emphasis using formatting (like underlining, highlighting, bolding, etc), "junking up" copy, and so on.

Yeah and it makes it real easy to discover who the hacks really are!

Good piece, as usual. And very succinct. I always try to model how he says so much in so few owrds.

P.S. Props to Allen Anderson to sending this thread my way. Thanks, bud.

I guess that this promotion is meant for those who are
already sold on Dan Kennedy. In this was they don't
have to do much selling. At least for just 25 spots
if the promotion is quite targeted they can meet their
goal in a short time. It's a matter of why overkill?

I love Dan Kennedy's books - the best thing I ever learned was from his book where he was talking about how he had a guy pack his boxes perfectly neatly, and everything was lined up seamlessly... and then he got a new guy to pack all of his boxes that didn't do it as neatly, did it in less than half the time, but all the boxes always arrived safely and in great shape... as long as the job gets done, it doesn't need to be perfect... there are some elements that in the scope of things just don't matter... and I can see this in his copywriting too, while others fuss over details that aren't going to make much of a difference... I see flaws in Dan's copyrighting yet it doesn't prevent him from creating wealth from his skills!
