How would you sell this?

**warning explicit topic**

I am looking for advice on how to approach writing sales copy -- I have never sold online, and want to know, a) What approach to take marketing the book (i.e. affiliate, display, PPC, simple website, long sales letter, etc.), and b) What makes for good salesmanship?

I am spinning my wheels writing sales copy for an ebook I wrote. It is a book on the female orgasm, based on hundreds of interviews I conducted. The book is a compilation of original content of women 18-65 telling their story of their best orgasm. Unplanned, they fell into distinct categories based on the type of sex, and I organized the book accordingly.

The book does not really preach a point, I put it together to entertain (man or woman, with a male slant, being one myself) and inform. I suggest appealing to a woman's interest is best for a partner to please her, and as the stories show, there are any number of interests different women have. Any learning would come from absorbing the many women's stories -- which are certainly what the reader walks away remembering.

Sold as a package are:
1) The book, about 150 pages.
2) Audiobook version, unabridged, MP3 format -- good recording and edit.
3) Bonus material -- compilation of 100 stories as an extra.

How would you approach marketing this? I am completely new to this so any advice is welcome. Thanks!

  • Seriously...

You just need an earth shatteringly good headline.

One that makes the earth move for the reader.

Making them tremble, gasp and have a full body spasm.

Promise they'll experience more of these...once they read the book.

And your sales will rocket up.

    Hope this helps,

    Steve

P.S. Did you really interview 100's women and ask them about their best ever orgasm?

Anyway I think we need to re-do the research.

Because most of us copywriters would love to.

It's likely our female copywriters would relish it the most.

      LOL Steve.

I've already given you guys some great stories, from the client I dated to the women I used to torment with Axe body spray at the women's college. Do I really need to share this too? :p

Angie, this is seriously important research. We probably need a great sample size to draw valid conclusions.

            @ Steve The Copywriter:

haha Yes I did interview around three hundred women for the project.
You are right about the headline. . . . I was trying to think, if I made a display ad (let alone landing page), how would I hook the viewer?

            @ Joe Ditzel:

Thanks for those links. Great interview with Chris Haddad.

            @ Larry1113:

Good question about the target market. It certainly has appeal for any adult (it's just great storytelling. . . . I'm amazed with how well told the stories are -- and they ring 100% genuine). It's fun eroticism. Even my gay brother begged for me to read them to him. So it certainly has appeal among men, and especially among those who enjoy the female orgasm experience more than the average man (I don't know, can you call that a fetish?). I am not too sure about women though. One hundred percent of women are interested in the stories, especially telling their own, but I don't know if it is just a browsing-a-Cosmo-mag level interest.

If I was to define a pain that my product is solving. . . . it's a thirst for perspective in how to best satisfy a woman, and learn to appeal to them for more, better sex. It's like having two hundred female friends, and having that rare, open conversation about sex with each one of them. How to translate that into hooking the viewer, and having that need-building conversation with them, I am interested to find out.

You could try selling it from the angle of "Unlocking the secrets of the female orgasm"

I know this topic is a bit of a mystery to many men and would be of particular interest to anyone looking for "Pick up" products.

You made a mistake by creating a product without first determining if there's an existing market for it. If you had done that, it would be clear how to sell it.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but it will all be downhill from here.

Maybe you'll luck out and find a hungry market for this material.

  • Look at your book as the center of your entire platform. You can build an entire business around the book.

Check out what other authors and entrepreneurs are doing with similar titles/topics. For example, Susan Bratton is making bank at personallifemedia.com:
    http://personallifemedia.com/

Listen to this interview Kevin Rogers did with Chris Haddad. Chris talks about this product "Text Your Wife Into Bed."
Text My Wife Into Bed? (Why I oughta!) | Kevin Rogers|Direct Response Copywriting Expert|Marketing Consultant|The Copywriter's Edge

    http://textyourwifeintobed.com/

Note how he found a "desperate market." Try to determine who would benefit most from your book. What did you discover in your interviews that someone is aching to know...and will pay for.

These and other marketers will give you some good ideas you can use to market your book/brand.

Have you defined your target market yet? Besides male?

Before writing your sales copy I would ask yourself these questions:

    1) What keeps your target market awake at night?

    2) How can I be highly successful and persuasive without much of a story or credibility?

    3) What are they afraid of?

    4) What makes them angry?

    - First, you have to know exactly the market you will enter
    - Second, in my opinion, should you provide a good graphic images for sales letter related to your topic
    - Third, give and state the benefits to the customer in reading your ebook, and the USP (unique selling proposition) must be clear

Will it affect the sales copy based on where I sell it? For instance, display ads on blogs versus display ads on porn sites? I know the book is still the same no matter where it is pitched -- but does it affect conversion negatively to funnel to just one generic set of sales copy? I want to test a variety of ways to market it. I guess I just need to come up with the first way, for a start.

    Thanks everyone for your advice!

      Short answer - Yes.

Longer answer - Yes, but you want to think less in terms of where the traffic's coming from, and more in terms of who the traffic is and why they might be interested in buying.

At the moment, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Start by finding out who's most likely to take your offer, put it in front of them, and then go from there.

      • Yes, ads on blogs, a squeeze page or your own website could all work.

The success depends on getting volumes of targeted traffic.

You could also send press releases to all the women's magazines.

It's possible they'll write features on your "discoveries"

Another option would be to kindle the book.

        Or publish the book.

Or do an amazon "print on demand"

Which coincidentally gives you a possible title - "Orgasms On Demand"

Andrew, thanks for your advice. You are right about figuring out who my traffic is. Is it bad that I don't exactly know what demographic to target just yet? I must test, I know, but how to do I figure out who my traffic is? Are they qualified by my assumptions of the traffic source (i.e. I assume most visitors off Great Auntie Mae's Cross Stitching Blog are freaky old ladies?).

You really should have all that information before you create your product so you know you're either filling a demand or solving a problem. Creating a product first and then hoping people are going to want it is a popular, but very poor strategy.

I'd have a look for sites selling similar products, or products that you think your potential buyers would be interested in. Then use Home | Quantcast to find out those sites' demographics. (If you find one site you can use http://www.compete.com to find more).

Use what you find out as your starting target demographic. And as soon as you start getting opt-ins/sales you want to be surveying your prospects/customers to find out who they are and what they want. The more information you gather, the more you can fine tune your message to match your market, the more sales you should make.

Here is an approach you might want to consider. Start with a squeeze page first--top copywriter Stephen Dean explains it here:

In your case you already have the product but there is some good strategy in that link.

        Yep.

Second time he's been told that in this thread.

All the strategies being offered won't work a lick if there's no demand.

Andrew -- Thanks for those links. Quantcast is awesome! I played around entering some websites. A lot more detail than, say, Alexa. I see why you use Compete.com -- similarly good.

Joe -- Good article by Stephen Dean. Thanks for sharing. It is sound advice not betting the farm before ever spinning the wheel.

    • I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of "market research" for the product.

Because surely the good news is -

Women do demand - or certainly desire more orgasms.

I have personally researched this over many years and the answer is a resounding yes.

Tests prove that at least one is required.

And as a copywriter it's always an excellent strategy to add a bonus or two...

How about not using sales skills and setting up a simple, white site with your text how you described it to us.

"It is a book on the female orgasm, based on hundreds of interviews I conducted. The book is a compilation of original content of women 18-65 telling their story of their best orgasm. Give an example story 'my favourite story',
tell about how it was conducting the interviews,
what surprised you when you did this...

You don't want to smell like you want to sell...
