Can anybody recommend a good source to teach HOW to think about calls to action? I know that is pretty basic but I seem to be only so-so at writing them, and wonder if I am missing some basic underlying theory?

Also, how do you change it up when it is not surrounded by supporting docs, for example when you are using it in a small stand alone ad like a facebook ad? Is that different from a call to action, on say a squeeze page? Thanks in advance.

HubSpot's got a couple of decent guides you should be able to pick up the basics from:

Free Ebook: How to Create Effective Calls-to-Action (their beginner guide)

    and

The Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering the Design & Copy of Calls-to-Action (their intermediate guide)

It's pretty simple. Based upon what you know about your market, what do you need to emphasize to get your prospect to take action?

It's usually based upon desire, logic, and/or fear.

Obviously, study the calls to action in successful marketing pieces. When I'm writing web copy or sales letter, I just review the calls to action in my swipe file of sales letters and web copy.
