Do any copyriters ever do work for a percentage of product sales?

Do copywriters ever work for a percentage of sales like a JV of some sort? I know some take a percentage anyways but was wondering if they would do it stictly for a higher percentage of sales? I can make products like crazy but my copywriting sucks big time.

Most copywriters worth their salt won't take a percentage of commission as their sole compensation unless the product owner has a proven track record. Of course, if your products are truly great and you can prove to the copywriter that you have a list or willing JV partners, it probably would be possible to obtain a fairly good copywriter for a higher percentage of sales.

  • ...there are times I do take a doze of pepper. And hope I don't sneeze.

But if I really trust a client - I can reduce the upfront fees and work on a success %.

I've actually been taking it a step further...

I started copywriting 12 years ago on just a flat fee basis.

A few years later, started doing a flat fee plus % of sales.

Now, these days, if I find a good product with crappy marketing, I just ask
the owner if I can buy their business outright... and many say "yes"

Now, when I say "business", usually they just have a product and a crappy sales letter and no traffic.

But for me, the most time consuming part of the deal is creating products.

So, if I find a pretty good one and it's got bad marketing or no traffic, instead of offering a 50-50 split or % of sales, I just try to buy them out completely... so I can just have complete control.

You'd be amazed at how many people have pretty good products, but almost no inclination to stick around long enough to make it work.

So instead of doing a ton of work and collecting a % of sales, I've been buying out sites/products and then collecting the entire enchilada.

      Shawn,

Great stuff here. How about I create a product for you to buy? It will be an interview with YOU on how to ACQUIRE a Stored Value product and turn it into another profit center.

Acquisition is the fastest way to get a product. One quick example, Ben Suarez secured the rights to publish an Old Best Seller...and did it with no money out of pocket...

And turned it into a NEW best seller by using Remote Direct Marketing methods.

The book was Folk Medicine by Dr. Jarvis. A best seller in 50's and again in 80's.

You should create a product that helps people understand ACQUISITION, or have someone create it for you.

I do, but it is conditional. Like others said, I have to trust you. And I have to know that once everything is in place you'll run lots of targeted traffic.

I actually prefer the percentage, but I normally charge an upfront fee in lieu of royalties. That way, if you don't follow through I have not wasted my time. And if you do follow through we both make a lot more money.
