It's being spread through Skype messaging.

"lol is this your new profile pic?" is the message followed by a link.

Don't touch it.

Stay safe.

So far, I haven't gotten this message. My contacts on skype are those people I really know so I think I'm pretty safe on skype. Anyway it wouldn't be a bad idea to remember your warning. Thanks.

It came through from one of my contacts and it's gone through
to another and in turn to his contacts.

      So very viral.

Lost hours getting hard drives scanned and had to de-install Skype.

      Best,
      Ewen

Thanks for the heads up, Ewen. I thought keeping my contacts to those I really know, like eugenedm does, would be enough to protect me - I guess not if it's going through contacts' contacts too.

Yeah I have no clue how it gets sent on to the contact list.

I don't even know how to remove the link sent to me in Skype.

      Nasty piece of work.

      Best,

Sorry to hear you got hit Ewen.

My guess would be that once you're infected, the malware hides somewhere in the Skype files stored on your computer's hard drive. Then when you open Skype, it activates and sends its nastygrams to everyone on your contact list.

Hands-down, best software I've found to blocking and removing malware, trojans and the like is Malwarebytes software. I can not recommend it highly enough... it's saved my computers countless times over the years.

        Non-affiliate link: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

They have a free version which is very good. But buying the professional version ($25) gets you real-time scanning which is awesome for blocking and alerting you about infected sites.

If your system still gets hit, they have a customer forum and tech support to talk you through getting your system bug-free too.

Add the Malwarebytes with a solid anti-virus (I use Avast) and a firewall (I use Windows Defender) and your systems will be pretty well protected.

        Hope that helps,

        Mike

As a huge skype user I appreciate this warning Ewen. I did a quick search and you're right - it's nasty. Personally I don't allow messages from people not on my contact list (a security setting in skype options).
