To All The Suckers...

I can read your mind.

No really.

You read this because you wanted to see if you were a sucker.

Here's what else I know about you...

You want me to like you -- You act like you're not hard up, but I know you're begging for attention.

You want me to think you're a somebody -- You play it off trying to act like you don't care, but deep down inside you're begging for acceptance.

You want me to think you look good -- Nonsense, you say...as you stare into the mirror every morning giving yourself a good long hard look. You try to look at yourself from every angle with the little hand held mirror.

You want to be wealthy -- Who isn't tired of working their boring job at the factory? But of course you're continuing a long family tradition of working for the "man". I know deep down inside you want to be different. You think you're special...there's something different about you, at least you think.

You want me to think you know what you're talking about -- You post or say things wanting me to stop and think, "Wow they know what they're talking about".

Still some more things I know about you...

Deep down inside you're still the same little kid emotionally you were when you were 10.

You're a curious little bugger.

You cry sometimes when no one else can see you. Matter of fact, you've cried yourself to sleep before.

The older you get, the more you resign yourself to just living the normal life everyone else does.

Most of the plans you had for your life didn't work out the way you planned. You've had some serious thoughts about whether or not you really were a loser.

There have been times you've looked at yourself in a mirror and been pi$$ed at what you saw looking back at you. Is that a wrinkle? Crap.

You've seen someone you haven't seen in a long time and thought, "Wow, time hasn't been good to them".

You wonder if others think you still look the same, or if you've aged more than most.

In your mind you always look the same as you did years ago.

You never think you look as old as you really do.

You know you're not in the best shape you could be, but you usually have a plan to do something about it in the future.

When someone you know dies, you try and rationalize why it happened. The older you get the more you
start to realize it could happen to you.

Male or female, there's been a couple times when watching a movie you've had to wipe away a tear of two.

You tell yourself you're not an easy sell. After all you say, I'm not a sucker, even though you secretly admit you've been ripped off a few times.

You're sometimes glad no one knows your deepest thoughts. Actually, you sometimes wonder if anyone else thinks some of the thoughts you do.

When you're by yourself you sometimes do things you wouldn't do if anyone could see you.

The way you act around people isn't always the real you. Sometimes you're fake, even though you claim you hate fake people.

You've done things you hope and pray nobody ever finds out about.

If you're single, you wish there was someone that loved you.

If you're married, sometimes you wish things were different.

You've daydreamed about being a big star.

You think your life story is unique.

You think you're the only one with some of the problems you have.

You've thought about committing a serious crime. You haven't, but it's a thought you've entertained.

Married or single, you've seen someone you thought was hot and secretly wished they had a thing for you.

You've wondered what it would be like when you died. You've even wondered how you'd die.

You've prayed for something real hard before...no matter what your religious views are.

You want to look hot in the clothes you wear.

You've wondered if UFO's were real.

You've looked at others and judged the way they were dressed, or the way their hair looks.

You want to write a million dollar sales letter...

...which leads me to this.

Once you stop and realize you're just like everyone else, you stop trying to be cute in your writing. You start writing from a personal view. You start connecting with your readers.

You're just like me...I'm just like you.

Write as though you know your reader...because you do, and you know them very well because you know yourself. They're not suckers, and neither are you.

Don't hold back. You've got them pegged...you've put a lot of research into them because "them" is you, and you know "you" pretty damn good.

Next time you write a sales letter, don't think your audience is some mystical group of people that live in another universe on some planet far far away...unless that's where you live too.

Thanks for that insightful information. Actually, I don't consider myself handsome at all, especially after my cancer surgery.

But I guess that is for others to judge more than me.

Hope you had a wonderful holiday season.

I didn't read past the fourth sentence.

Did you know I have no attention span?

Nah. I'm just an ass. Didn't you know that?

It's a good post. A reminder there are some unspoken (near) universals and acknowledging them in your writing is a shortcut to trust and credibility.

The reader says, "Wow! He knows me. He's just like me. I like this guy."

Honesty, don't you just love it.

We all do on occasion. We start with one thought and go on and on.

I read some of the beginning points.

I actually agree with that, because so many people on this forum act like they're making bank, but you can easily tell they're not (and I'm not talking about in the forums). I'll give you one hint... get WHOIS protection people

I'm pretty honest with myself in here, but then I've come to the realization that honest salesman go hungry so you have to be one of those people to get the orders, even if you are on a shoestring budget.

You make an interesting point, but I think you are confusing honesty with a lack of knowledge/training.

Honesty is unrelated to the OP, while knowledge and training is what the OP is all about.

Max, you shouldn't give away the secret.

Even though you have given away the keys to the kingdom, it's still safe.

From personal experience, I know a really great big huge lot of people won't believe what you've told them up there is the truth. It's just too flippin' simple to work.

      Thank you Tina.

Although I agree with another poster that I was a bit long winded, I was trying to drive a point home.

Someone posted a link to emotional copywriting, but I wasn't alluding to it. I'm talking about something different.

I agree with you, it is one of the biggest secrets anyone can learn, and I wondered if most would understand the point I was trying to make.

When someone completely understands, their work usually goes from so so to spectacular.

      Thanks again for your comment.

25 years publishing a newsletter is quite a feat. He obviously knows his stuff. Being an entertainment business attorney and consult to record labels, he is obviously connected to people and the industry on a regular basis, which helps him tremendously.

In a roundabout way, this post reminds me of the principles of selling that old-timers like Elmer Wheeler, Frank Bettger, and Harry Browne used so successfully. More recent marketers like Joe Sugarman had similar viewpoints.

Their contention was that people were very similar at heart, and just like them, didn't like to be manipulated. By recognizing that parity and helping customers get what they wanted (as opposed to a hard sell to get them to buy it), they did quite well.

It seems that people are generally distrustful of someone trying to sell them something, but much more trusting of someone trying to help them get something or solve a problem for them.

Coming back to Max's post, it's a good point about how, deep down, the customer really is pretty much like ourselves...recognizing, of course, there will be substantial differences because most of the time we are NOT the customer...we just share a lot of what makes us human.
