what font size do you suggest for a direct mail sales letter. I know size 12 is highly recommended but what size would you recommend?

Not enough info to offer a comprehensive answer....

What kind of mailer are you sending? A post card? A greeting card? A letter in an envelope?

How much space do you have to work with? 8.5x11? 5x7?

Who is your target market? Old folks may have trouble with 12p... You may want to go 16p.

What font are you going to use? Serif? Sans Seriff?

I'm guessing your talking about the body copy... How large of type are you planning for the headline?

Depends on the situation. 12 pt. is typical. I've heard of people going as low as 8 if they really needed the space. But there's a line where it starts to get harder to read as a result.

Typically, figure out how much space you have, and how much you need to fit into that space to sell the thing. If you absolutely can't take enough out to fit your space (or shouldn't because it will ruin the pitch), decrease font size to fit it. Otherwise 12 pt.
