The Game Before The Copy

In this killer 5 minute ad from Beats, you'll see the pregame rituals of some of the biggest names in soccer.

Did Beats by Dre Just Out-Nike Nike With This Incredible World Cup Ad? | Adweek

And the ad itself will get you motivated to tear down walls (music is "Jungle" (from the series "Orange is the New Black") - Jamie N Commons + X Ambassadors).

What about you? Do you have any precopywriting rituals?

    Nice.

The few minutes before I write copy, I like to read copy.

It clears my mind and puts me in the right mindset to write, especially when I am writing motivating sales copy for clients.

I also like to study copy writing at least 30 mins in the morning.

      This.

I normally have a read through a relevant swipe file to get in the zone ... and then crank out the roughest draft of copy you've ever seen in your life.

If it weren't for editing ...

        Exercise...

I'll go do something which generally works a bunch of muscles like squats or deadlifts.

        Clears my mind big time.

        Then I shower...

Then I'll work on an email or copy out a successful letter.

Drinking a bunch of water in the process.

Same here, Chris, though I prefer boxing. Helps me work out any mental blocks/problems with clients I come across, and it's a great workout.

No comment on what I imagine the bag as, though...

Just watched this ad before coming here. I lost interested around the 2:00 mark. The intro was good, but it wasn't interesting enough to watch after 2:00, imo. Maybe I'd enjoy it more if I were a soccer / football fan.

I have daily habits -- not rituals. There's no "zone" I need to get myself into to write copy. I simply write the copy. Of course I go through the product, take notes, do research, etc. I suppose some might call that a ritual.

I'm not saying rituals are not effective. I just don't like the word ritual. It sounds like you have to call toward some higher woo woo power to perform. I think that's bs.

I do believe in something called anchoring. It's kind of the same thing as a ritual, except it grows the more you do it. Anchoring is doing something like ringing a bell when you make a sale -- and ringing it again before you set out to make another one. I first heard about this in Jordan Belfort's Straight Line Persuasion System. Anchoring been around for a while and it's used on Wall St. It goes back even further if you remember the salivating dog and ringing bell study.

I just clear my head, close my door, make sure I have no distractions, and then proceed to do my work.
