I am going to build a website with wordpress to supplement my ebay business.
First I have to learn wordpress which should not be too difficult as there are loads of resources (books, internet etc).

The main question I need to ask is that a lot of people have said wordpress websites are not that secure and hackers can access them easily. So which is the best hosting plan to support a wordpress website and of course is also good value for money.

I have had experience of hostgator in the past and they seem quite cheap.

Any comments will be gratefully appreciated.

As an ecommerce you'll need to purchase SSL encryption which should reduce hack attempts. Host preferences vary, so I'm sure others will post their favorites.

If you are building an ecom store you definitely want to get SSL. I always recommend to my clients to go with WP Engine. Yes, it is more expensive but they guarantee the security (they fix it for free if it gets hacked), they do nightly backups, and they are fast as heck. They also will keep your website up to date which is where a lot of the hacking happens, non-updated plugins.

Hope this helps, if you have any more questions feel free to get in touch!

Wordpress and woocommerce is a great way to go. If you are going to accept credit cards on your site directly then it's recommended to get a SSL cerfiticate. If it's just paypal you will be fine. You can also use the amazon checkout plugin which allows person to check out through amazon. Woocommerce has alot of flexablity. I can actually help you with this, drop me a message.

I am working on doing the same thing. I sell on eBay and Craigslist with good results. I am transitioning from my present business which is construction into more web related online sales and marketing type ventures.

I set up with HostGator and like them. I know very little about what I am doing. I am trying to learn as I go. My attitude is do something even if it is wrong. I was going through a period of paralysis by analysis.

What I did was got hosting, registered a domain name, and installed Wordpress. Now I search the web in an effort to learn. I watch a Youtube video on the iPad while I work on the site on the laptop. I'm not trying to build the next big thing, I am just performing exercises to learn.

Anyone who reads this correct me if I am wrong. What I see as valuable is to learn Wordpress, use social media, and create content. I sell on ebay, and craigslist so that helps create revenue and allows me to cross promote and see the effect. I believe that this is about building income streams through various efforts as the process takes hold hopefully one become a raging torrent.

Well, well, SSL or what,I will try my best to avoid the credit card payment or what ever need SSL, the thing is as long as you got the paypal secured, and you can have a hosting at no cost, shopping site is just a bunch of codes from module now, your biggest concerns is the security of your money.

      First

As for Hostgator, avoid EIG companies and go with a company with good customer service and that does not overload their sites. Veerotech is quite active on this forum and is good quality hosting (I use them). I know a lot of people are also moving to A2 Hosting as well. (EIG includes Bluehost, Site5, Arvixe, Hostgator...)

      Second

Any reason you are choosing to learn a platform like wordpress instead of using a hosted commerce platform such as BigCommerce. In fact, when eBay closed down Magento Go and Prostores, they migrated everyone to BigCommerce. Add to it they are already integrated with eBay and have easy third party apps to handle multi-platform selling. You can learn to build a site or you can build one easily and spend time marketing.

      Third

Yes, wordpress has security issues. And, if you are running an e-commerce store, hacks become a bigger deal. Its not just about fixing it but whether they had access to Personally Identifiable Information. If they received PII from your site in 47 states you are required to notify those customers and it is possible you can lose your ability to take payments. In addition, if the merchant provider finds you were not PCI compliant, they can push all breach expenses down to you.

      Fourth

If you insist on using wordpress, then take a look at something like cart66 cloud which pushes some of the hacking (PII) risk onto them. Personally, spend the time setting up either a Shopify or BigCommerce site and concentrate on marketing.

      Fifth

If you end up using woo-commerce, the minimum you will have to do will be:

      Dedicated IP address
      SSL Certificate
Try and find a Sucuri certified premium theme
Make sure you check daily for updates on your site
Make sure you add in a security plugin

This is the bare minimum you would need to do to protect your customers data.

I use Hostgator and have a lot of Woocommerce sites. Never had a problem. There are many security plugins for Wordpress to secure your site and most of them are free.

In addition, keeping your Wordpress install and extensions up to date is a good idea.

With any popular platform i.e Windows or indeed Wordpress, you are going to get security issues. But with the right approach, you can minimize these. Make sure your deployment is updated continuously and choosing hosting provider carefully can help.

If you're concerned with the resource required to make a website secure, you can always use Wordpress.com and let them handle these issues you can focus on your website.
