Okay i recently was interested in Ecommerce.

So i did some reading but i still dont know everything.
I have yet to connect all the dots.

Some very practical questions about setting up here.

I have hosting with webhostingpad..

They say they have free scripts which is shown on their main page, oscommerce and magento.

1. So by setting up either one of this scripts, it will help me take payment with paypal, organize my stock, shopping cart etc?

2. do i have to pay monthly fee or per transactions or is it free? im confused. because they say its free script, but when i ask their CS they show me a table of fees.
It doesnt make sense, WP is also in the free script but WP isnt charging me fees.. lol. so i dont understand.

Thanks

Your question is not really clear... if you have specific question regarding your ecommerce script. Perhaps you should consult the script developer?

here's some advice that I hope helps you.

    1. Know what is is you are going to be selling
    2. Purchase domain
    3. Find cheap web hosting company - perhaps webhostingpad you mention above
    4. Install varios free shopping carts - I use magento and can recomment it.
    5. Find a free template for your shopping cart. For Magento you can get a free template here: Free Magento Themes 1.5.1.0 Get Free Magento Theme 1.4 > Download - you will need to change banners etc, but you should be able to do that yourself and later, when you have money, get a good graphic designer to do the banners.
    6. Get yourself a company
    7. register yourself with a reseller's licence or whatever it is you require in your country in oder to allow you to buy from genuine wholesalers.
    8. Get yourself a business bank account for your company.
    9. Get yourself a phone and fax for your company - when starting out, and to keep costs down, you can use your own landline number. I wouldn't recommend that you use a mobile number.
    10. Find wholesalers and tell them you want to sell their goods online and ask them for a dealership agreement and price list.
    11. Sign up for a business PayPal account and link it to your business account - not sure which country you're in but you should be able to get a PayPal with no monthly fees - you just pay for each sale.
    12. Drive traffic to your site.
    13. Later on you can also do other things like get a merchant account to accept credit card payments, redesign your site/add shopping cart extensions for more functionality, set up an email marketing campaign etc.

Not all of the above is free but most of it can be fairly cheap to set up.

    Hope this helps

hey hi Robert, i see u again.

grreat input, but i think he is asking whether he needs to pay anything for magento since he is using the script under his hosting company and its listed as free scripts.

So he is thinking if he has to pay per transaction like a payment processor or a monthly payment.

this can be confusing because they can say, its free script to install but may not be free to use monthly. i dont know. haha

      any advice?

      but i think

Well, Magento is free to install - you can install it with a click of a button in a lot of cpanels. Of course, you would need to modify it and change banners. If you can use photoshop you could probably do this yourself.

I doubt if his hosting company would charge him any kind of fee for using Magento. I'd imagine he would only pay his usuall monthly hosting fee.

So, you could get yourself a shopping cart like Magento installed and up and running for no cost.

As for accepting payments: most estores allow customer to pay either by credit card or PayPal (some also use other payment gateways, I know, but the two I mentioned are by far the most popular).

For CCs you have to get youreslf a merchant account and you will have to pay a monthly charge for it, whether you make any sales or not. Should you make sales then you pay the merchant account provider a percentage of the value of th eitem sold. How much you pay will vary depending on many reasons which I won't go into here.

You can get yourself a business PayPal account and you won't have to pay any monthly fee. You pay a fixed percentage on each sale you make.

With Magento you can easily add CCs and PayPal to your store - no programming is necessary, so free to install.

Your hosting company will not levy any sort of charge on each sale you make. You will just pay them a monthly fee for hosting your site.

If you're new to online marketing (and it sounds like you might be) WordPress also has several e-commerce plugins that are easy to use.
