After some research I decided I want to start out on BigCommerce. So I am currently building my first sites, making changes to the templates. But I am curious to know if I decide to switch shopping cart providers down the road, to for say Magento will my work be lost or can the whole site be transferred?

I understand my product, Images, and categories can be transferred along with the URL but I am referring to everything else..

To get back on topic, yes you can transfer your site to a different solution if you need to down the road. You can export all of your products, customers, orders, etc. to a csv file, which can be uploaded to your new site. I know there are instructions on how to do this on BigCommerce's website, as I have used it in the past. Best of luck!

You can always move, but it is a PITA to ensure you 301 redirect everything. You probably will get a temporary drop in organic search traffic. So it's better to pick the right platform from the beginning to avoid it all.

Not to mention if you have enhancements on your site like rich snippets, google authorship, pinterest data, facebook open graph, twitter cards, remarketing/retargeting tags, you have got to do it ALL OVER.

This is what I really meant to ask, I understand I can move my product/customer list and all that but what I really meant to ask is can you move everything else you put into a site...

Why would you want to change later on? I suggest you pick a platform and stick with it. Will only benefit you in the long run!

Transferring to a new platform is NOT fun or easy. It actually a major headache.

As others have mentioned it's strongly advised to pick a platform that you can stay with for a while.

I'm sure, you can contact BigCommerce. As I know, they can help you with migration. Otherwise, use migration service called cart2cart. It transfers products, customers, orders and some other data. However, it doesn't migrate template and SEO.
