Hi Everyone,

I just launched a new business, a monthly jerky subscription club because honestly- who doesn't love jerky?

I am looking for some advice on some low cost/no cost ways to get the word out beyond my network.

I also am open to any website feedback. The site is very simple. I already plan to add a tagline to the logo (Delicious jerky delivered monthly) and change the hideous Paypal button.

Incredible Jerky

Thank you for your help and support!

I say this a lot in this forum...but that's totally because I really believe in it.

    Start a blog, man!

Beef jerky is a great starting point for a fun blog -- normally, I suggest that eCommerce site owners try blogging about the niche within which their store sits. Eg, if you're running an outdoor apparel site, I'd say you should start writing (or hire someone to write) an outdoor lifestyle blog. Do something that caters to your audience and what they want, then they'll keep people coming back and you'll build a following/trust/authority around your blog. Oh, and Google LOVES good content, so pumping your site full of it via a blog will do wonders for your SEO situation.

SO. What you have is kind of a unique opportunity. Beef jerky gives you a lot of room to play around. And while it's probably the easiest and most obvious choice, I would recommend starting a funny MANLY MAN type of blog. Maybe don't go explicitly gendered with it, to avoid alienating...y'know, half the population. But you can do a cool blog about something that relates to beef jerky. Maybe it's a blog about camping and the outdoors lifestyle, which actually totally works in this situation. Maybe it's a blog dedicated to things that are comically or outlandishly tough/rugged. Either way, serving up good content by way of a blog is a GREAT way to get traffic to your site, build your authority in the eyes of the Internet, and generally market yourself.

Content marketing is the way to go these days, and if you can get someone with an eye for content curation/creation, you're golden. A lot of people can do this themselves. It seems like you've got a bit of personality, so I'd totally be surprised if you couldn't at least start a blog on your own. Finding freelancers to whip up articles for you here and there is as easy as it is affordable.

And by the way -- you've got a great tagline sitting right at the top of this thread.

"Because honestly - who doesn't love jerky?"

Don't waste that, man. Use it. It's great! It's simple and to the point, and it's just cheeky enough to make people smile. It made me smile when I read it, and it wasn't even being used in a marketing context intentionally. I'd make sure to include that somewhere on your site. It's a great little bit of copy.

    Hope this helps!

This is great advice. I do have long-term plans for expanding and offering additional things, I was just trying to keep the current website and offering very simple. That is why I hadn't started a blog. But you are right maybe it is something I need to get going sooner rather than later.

Do you think it should be a blog with its own domain name with links back and forth to the site are better or a blog built-in on the current site is best?

I'd add more pictures to your site. Make me ( and your customers ) hungry like the many other beef jerky stores do online. Then I'd use those pictures to drive sales via pintrest and other image social media sites. You can also use adwords and bing promotions to get those first few customers. I think ebay might be a good place to sell discounted packages to get started too. It's free to list for the next few days -- might be worth trying. You can also do kickstarter if you can do some great pictures and a good video. Be sure to build a list and educate your buyers and possible buyers. That will be your long term money maker.
I found your 12 month price to be so high also ( only 51 cents off the 6 month price? ) Maybe change that to be more affordable?

    Good luck.

Thank you. I will have to put together more pictures, and learn about Pintrest....

Is Kickstarter also a way I can get people to sign up or just a funding platform?

I am trying to slyly encourage people to choose the 6 month option.

kjamesnv - I know this might sound crazy, but is there any exchange online where people can "trade" TESTIMONIALS?

DO NOT use fake testimonials. Its a bad idea for several reasons.

#1 Its illegal. the FTC regularly fines marketers for using fake testimonials.

#2 Getting caught would ruin your credibility.

#3 Its lying and completely unethical.

#4 If you can't find a few customers to say good things about your products then that is a big problem and you might want to think about doing something else.

Stick with real testimonials. Its worth it.

Any idea what the best plugin for displaying testimonials is? I have tried a few but I haven't really like them?

    I really like your idea!

Everyone loves Beef Jerky and I think you could do well with this type of platform.

    About the site...
    - I really like the logo
    - You need more pics and content
    - The site to me, does not showcase the product well enough to want to make me buy.

Have you thought about a direct order? Something like "try / buy now" for $25 and then send out the jerky so your clients know it's legit and the jerky is good? (Follow up with them via email or a phone call to get the subscription)

Also... I think FB ads could really help.

Good job and I think you can do well with this!
