send in blue is impossible.

Has no way to export a list.
Really poor documentation.
Crap filtering. (If I have an Opt_In date, and want to search it for people who opted in more than 3 years ago, I have to convert that to days ago.)
No clear way to contact them.
No community forum.
No obvious way to tag contacts.

I'm currently trying to decide on which i want to use as an autoresponder for the first time: mail chimp or aweber. For a brand new person using an autoresponder, which of those two options do you think would be best for me?

If you're planning to do any affiliate marketing or get involved in MMO, stay away from MailChimp. That's against their TOS.

Other than that, look for an autoresponder that offers a free trial period so you can test the service and see if it fits for you.

Awesome thank you, I would not have known that! I was originally considering Aweber, and Affiliate Marketing and MMO is exactly what I want to do lol, so would Aweber be a better option?

Aweber has been around for years and many marketers recommend it. Whether it's right for your business depends on what you want from it and how fast you intend to grow. All I'll add is that if email marketing is part of your long-term strategy, choosing an autoresponder service that will be able to cope with your intended growth should be a major consideration. Although it's possible to do, transferring your email database to another company down the line is a PITA.

Other than that, you'll find plenty of threads on autoreponders if you do a forum search as this is a perennial topic.

Thank you Frank. I think I'll give it a try and see if it's going to be a good fit. I appreciate the advice about considering what I want to do with it long term, I was really only thinking in the short term at the moment about figuring out how to use it. I appreciate your response.

Well I often sit here in the Email Marketing forum and find out that people are looking for alternatives. But you have to specify what are you trying to accomplish and details about your list.
I can suggest our service but without details, asking people in here would be like typing in google "Mailchimp alternatives" and getting the same results.

Ok, I've been searching for a better alternative to Mail Chimp.
I've been using mailchimp sporadically for several years. I'm now at the point where I'm running out of free address slots.
Thinking to squeak by for another year or so, I went to prune my list.
MC doesn't give you tools for that.
You can 'archive' addresses but they still show up in the list.
You can't easily move through your list. If you want to take an action on a subset, you have to select the ones you want, one click at a time per hundred addresses.
There is no good way to filter what you are seeing. E.g. Show me all the addresses that have been signed up for 2 or more years that have under a 50% click rate on any of the links.
Even on a wide display, you can't see all the columns -- they cut off the page at something like 1024 pixels.

So, I'm looking at other emailers.

I don't send often. 2-4 times a year. So I'm maybe sending 7000 emails per year. If I can get organized, this will increase to 8 times per year: Monthly from February through May, bimonthly the rest of the year (Tree farmer. Very seasonal)

Right now I'm looking at:
Mailjet: 6000 emails per month (but only 200/day) This would be good for years.
MailerLite: 12,000 emails/month free version. But lower deliverability compared to some.
SendGrid. Dedicated SMTP server. But slow customer support.
SendInBlue. Import was straight forward. 300 messages/day in free version. (So a newsletter would take a week to send. No big deal.

Criteria
Contact Management
Needs to be able to export list as CSV or excel spreadsheet.
Filtering: I want to be able to do compound searches: Show me contacts that have been on the list for 3 years but have an opening rate under 50%
Sorting: Sort the entire list by last date they opened an email.
Tagging: Allow tagging each contact with multiple tags.
Easy movement through list.
Should be easy to download a subset of the list as an excel file, modify it, and upload.
Unique subject line for each recipient. When someone replies, gmail groups all replies with the same subject line into a single conversation.
Easy to use templates.
Customer Support
Good searchable documentation or help system. Two word searches shouldn't give me 500 articles. Nor should I have to read everything in a tiny sidebar.
Clear way to contact them.
Community forum for users
Pricing
Must have a free level with the capacity of 2500 messages per month.
Price of under 2c/message
Graceful transition between free and paid versions. (E.g. MC you can have a list of 2000 that you can send to free, but at 2001 the best you can do is to go on their pay-as-you-go plan where you pay 3 cents each for all 2001 messages.

Immediate rejects:
ActiveCampaign. No free starter plan
Campaign Monitor. No free starter plan. Complicated.
ConvertKit. Aimed at ecommerce (I want newsletter functionality) Starts at $30/month
iContact. $14/month to start but only 500 subscribers.
MailerLite $10/month for 1000 subscribers.

Other Rejects

I've used Aweber for several years. They are alright, but are a little expensive. I recently started using Sendgrid. So far I like them.

Since they don't allow affiliate marketing I've never used them other than I set up a free account out of curiosity to test their deliverability.

I do know someone that had a 500K+ list with mailchimp and they moved over to activecampaign.com not long ago.

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice regarding the use of MailChimp.

My car club has around 7,000 members throughout the UK. We're looking at MailChimp to communicate with our membership.

However, club is split into around thirty-five "Areas" and each of these areas has an "Area Coordinator". Ideally, I'd like each of these 35 coordinators, to be able to access their own segment of the master audience list and communicate local news to their local area members.

Is it possible to do this with MailChip with an Essentail or Standard account as I only have one Audience, but would like these 35 people to be able to send emails?

I can split the Audience into the thirty-five chunks fairly easily.

Hey there I have a great dislike of mailchimp - especially for affiliate marketing. It just doesn't accept it and I don't really like the interface anyway. I really like GetResponse and AWeber, I find them more functional and user friendly and also accepting of affiliate marketing. For a startup firm, affiliate marketing or not I think you can find better value elsewhere.

What alternatives you consider depends on what your priorities are.

I recently read about the owner of a big list (100k+) who saved a lot of money and got better tools for his needs by changing to a different mailing-list management system.

MailChimp is great if you only have a small list, want basic functionality and understand what you are doing. If you are inexperienced, it can be a disaster, because their free account won't give you any details if you make a mistake (such as doing what so many cheap courses tell you to do, and just copying and pasting email swipes from an affiliate product), they just close your account and give you zero clue why.

I's also consider BuilderAll . . . some of the plans offer UNLIMITED email management, their visual workflow is a good idea I think, and they give a lot of other tools all in the same relatively low monthly price, including web hosting, and lots more.

Mailchimp has a bunch of other flaws: The list management is already clunky at 1800 contacts. It's hard to filter, hard to move around, hard to check.

I've also had problems with responses to emails being agglomerated into a single thread. MC has 'conversations' but you have to deal with those on MC's web site. I think I need distinct "Reply-To:" fields for each contact.

Self-hosted on Mailwizz. By far my favorite alternative.

Favorite autoresponder though is Get Response. Features, interface, and deliverability makes it hard to beat.

I enjoy using both though. Always smart to have at least two autoresponders, if you're serious about your email marketing business.

The only issue is it does not have the integrations that Mailchimp has, but I suspect that will be the case for most of the alternatives mentioned.

Hey folks!

I am thinking about bringing affiliate offers into my email marketing.

All of my list is opt-ins but it is in the dating niche, so there are some affiliate offers that could easily be (mis)judged by ESPs as spam.

I've read plenty of horror stories about the consequences of doing this, especially on mailchimp, which I am currently using.

Is anyone doing this successfully in 2020? What's the best strategy? Does link cloaking work, or are ESP's able to pick up the final destination of the URL?

If you are doing it successfully, what ESP are you using? What link cloaking tool?

If you can self host PhPlist is a good free option and no limitations. Tracking from links clicked to how long it took them to open the email from time sent. Out of the box it does not have an autoresponder feature but if you go to the plugins you can add one there in seconds.
