Need help with Wordpress Autoresponder/Subscription plugin

Hi everyone,

I am hoping you can help me decide how to proceed.

I am starting a Wordpress blog site and want to have subscription forms for free newsletters and eventually paid newsletters. I am trying to decide which autoresponder/list manager to use. I am going to use AmazonSES as my delivery system. I have a small budget at the moment so, I am trying to find the best option that I can afford right now. As my site and income grows... I can upgrade to other options if needed.

I am (unfortunately) on shared hosting with GoDaddy at the moment but I have already been having issues so I am going to move my site... I am thinking of going with Site Ground - any opinions? They seem to be very good, good uptime, robust features, good support, in my price range.

I purchased IMSC Rapid Mailer and have had nothing but problems. I can't use any other plugin with it or it crashes my site. So...

One of the reasons I am thinking of Site Ground is because one of the autoresponders I am looking at is ArpReach, which is not compatible with GoDaddy(not much is). I like all the features, though it doesn't seem to support paid lists. Mailpoet is another that looks promising but again doesn't seem to support paid lists. I also found Tribulant Newsletter. It seems similar to Rapid Mailer, with the option to have paid lists but I can't find a lot of reviews on it.

What are your opinions? Any others that I should take a look at? ArpReach seems popular but if I go with that one, what should I use when I am ready to do a paid list/newsletter.

I know many people like Aweber, GetResponse, MailChimp and the like but those aren't options for me. I would appreciate it if we could keep the comments to self-hosted.

    When you say, "PAID LISTS" what are you referring too?

    I think knowing that will better help people helping you.

    Basically, how are you building your lists?

      I don't have anything to build my lists... that is what I am looking for.

      Something that has a form where people would sign up to receive newsletters (eventually I will have a premium newsletter with different content and downloads that people would pay to subscribe to) then... that would maintain my lists on my site and have autoresponders and the ability to create newsletters that I would send using AmazonSES.

      I hope that is a little more clear.

    I have been using Tribulant on one of my sites. Took a bit to setup but once going it has been very good. Their support has been great they even sent me custom code to do extra things no charge.

    This is an old thread so you've probably got these questions answered by now.

    I'm an arpReach user and have researched a number of hosting providers. If you plan to utilise an external SMTP service such as Amazon or Mandrill you wouldn't be able to do this with Site Ground's shared hosting services. You would need to use their cloud hosting - so obviously pricing per month is significantly higher.

    From what you've said though, if you are going to be just using your auto-responder for newsletter sign-ups then for a while at least you should be fine just using arpReach and whatever local MTA the host provides.

    If newsletter delivery is not critical then you can continue like this for a long time. Typical hourly sending limits with shared hosting will allow ~75 - 200 emails per hour, so if no need for everyone to receive the newsletter at the same time then you can send out a couple of thousand emails each day.

    It's when you have the need to send out broadcast email to a large list all at once when you need to have an external SMTP service available. This will then require SMTP ports to be unblocked, and this is what needs to be double checked with any potential hosting company.

    If you're using arpReach then come and join our Facebook group - just search for 'arpReach Moguls'. there's a lot of arp users in the group and some good advice gets shared..

      Thanks Jay! I have been using Tribulant since my list is still small but will probably move to arpReach when I move to a new server next year - what hosting company do you recommend?
