Just wondering if anyone is implementing Harlan's Blog Curation course?

I would like to know if anyone has had any success yet?

I've had a look at this curation thing, and even bought software to help, but to be honest, it's not half as simple as they amke out. As we know most of what's on the Internet is complete garbage and trying to sift it out to make something worth putting on your own pages is a time-consuming and difficult procedure. I decided to give up after a couple of test runs.

Yes, and that's precisely what makes curation valuable! The difficulty in effectively sifting the most worthwhile nuggets from the "so-so", let alone the crap, is something people face everyday.

But it's also why finding a well-curated site in an area of interest is so worthwhile. I think it's safe to say most people would prefer going to a site that did that for them then having to go to the time & trouble of sifting & sorting themselves.

If were that easy to do, there'd be little value in curation.

Harlan's the creator of Beach Millions so he has a good track record of creating valuable products that help people immensely.

Make of that what you will!

You get out of Blog Curation exactly what you put into it.

A lot of people think curation is going to magically create overnight riches.

      It's not.

Here is an example of a curation site I've been working on is Your Source for Everything Dog | The Dogington Post

I spent 6 months getting traffic and building a Facebook page (now 40K+ likes and they are active.) One post got over a million likes.

      So the system works.

If you are looking for overnight success, overnight rankings, etc - it's not going to happen.

On the other hand, I positioned the product for people interested in building a business - and there are many people who are succeeding.

If you were in our blog curation program and did not achieve success, please submit your blog here and I'll be happy to give you my feedback.

I purchased Harlan's Blog Curation program last spring (March I believe). I worked very hard to decide on a niche and create a curation site in a subject that I love and am competent in (but more importantly, that gets good traffic and has rabid fans). The niche I chose suits me well.

Here is my honest appraisal and my experience with the program:

1- Everything is well laid out and the instructions are comprehensive. I have no doubt that if you are able to do everything as suggested, you should have a wonderful curation site. Whether you can make six figures in six months with it as claimed is certainly up for discussion.

2- The niche you choose is very important and you need to find the "sweet spot" between being too general and too specific so there is a good amount of news in the chosen niche on a daily basis.

3- The course teaches that you should curate four articles a day if possible - although you could do less or more depending upon the news in your niche and the time you have to put into your site.
This is where I ran into problems. Harlan talks in the course about doing a day's four posts in a few minutes (I believe he said 15 minutes/4 posts but don't quote me on that as I don't remember exactly.) It was taking me an hour, on average, to do one post. Why? Because I wouldn't post anything unless it was quality content which means you have to read through all the day's news so you find the best articles to curate.

In addition, I was adding an image to every post which means you have to either buy a cheap stock image or find a free image online (I was using public domain images mostly). It takes time to find good public domain images then download them, get them up on your site, give them attribution, etc, etc. Plus, I was cataloging my images on my computer so that if someone ever questioned my photo use, I could quickly go back to the source and prove I had the right to use it.

In addition, you have to add your own commentary to the curation post. It's pretty easy if you just say generic things like "Check out this article I found about . . . blah, blah, blah." I didn't want to do that as it really adds no value. But if you add valuable content (which I tried to do for every post) it takes time and effort to sort your thoughts, say what you want to say and make it all fit into an "intro" and "outro".
4- Harlan's sales pitch claimed something like six figures in six months. I would like to know how many of his students that signed up during his launch in March are now making six figures. Of course, I have no way of knowing that and I don't think he does either. But my guess is, very few, if any. I would love to have Harlan chime in here and tell us about all his six figure students so we could actually see what a six figure business looks like.
It's not that the system doesn't have the potential to give you big returns . . . I think it does and Harlan teaches you everything you need to know about blog curation to do it. I just don't think, from my own personal experience, that getting to six figures is easy because of the time involved. I recognize that I could be spending less time by cheapening my site with less valuable content, curating articles I didn't read, no images, etc, but I didn't want to do that. I personally work at least 10 hours a day on other businesses and I don't have 4 more hours every day to do curation as I want to do it (meaning a very high quality site with my own added valuable content.)
5- The Beach Millions software is supposed to make curation very fast and easy. My own personal experience is that it does save a little time in helping you to find content, but it doesn't read that content for you (which takes a lot of time) to determine newsworthiness and quality. And it doesn't reduce the overall time it takes to curate much when you want to have a site like mine that has relevant free PD images, added valuable content, proofreading your curations, etc.

Here's my synopsis. I really tried hard to make this work, but I was never able to post 4 articles a day like Harlan suggests. Even half that, 2 articles a day was taking me a couple of hours and that was time away from my family - not what I or my wife wanted.
If you have the time, Harlan's course and methodology is excellent. But I doubt that many people have six figure sites because it's hard to put in the time required for six months without any return.
I think Harlan started the Dogington Post in January and I'd be interested as to whether he is making $10K per month with it yet (btw, he says he outsources much of the work - I'd like to do that, but don't have the money to do it and I know that it would reduce the quality of my curation because of the lack of knowledge and experience in the niche on the part of the outsourced writer). Harlan has two sons that have curated blogs more than six months old, so they should also be making six figures.

Sorry this post is so long, but it's my honest feedback.

Just a quick add-on to my previous post. I received an email from Harlan today (Sept. 24th). Here is what he said about his Dogington Post revenue:

"We are a long way from break-even but the site is becoming known throughout the industry."

So he is continuing to beef up his main curation site and is starting to see good traffic and some authority with it, but he has spent more on it so far than he has earned in return.

He should have a valuable asset which could potentially make him a lot of money when he sells it.

For those of you contemplating building a curation site, as others have said in this thread,

          - It is not easy
          - It will most likely take you many months before you break even
          - It is a lot of work (of course, most profitable online methods are no different)
          - If you can see the process through the "early months of no revenue" you could potentially have a valuable asset on your hands if you keep working it

I continue to hope Harlan will post again on this thread and give us some examples of this statement in his post above:

"On the other hand, I positioned the product for people interested in building a business - and there are many people who are succeeding."

His software does not work for me and when I asked for a refund he told me it was my plugins, themes etc. No refund.
I have since used a very inexpensive curation software that works just fine.
I think if Harlan was really a responsible seller he would have given that refund to a very unhappy customer. That's my 2 cents...

Harlan, why did you unsubscribe me from the Blog Curation list?

I paid you money for this course (which has had NO results), and you've got the cheek to ignore my request for feedback (which you offered), and now you have manually unsubscribed me from the Blog Curation list.

Is this how you treat customers that have given you their money and trusted you?

I've been running my site for 6 months, and guess what?..NO RESULTS.

          I expect a full refund.

            1. If anyone can find where I promised 6 figures in 6 months, I'll give $1000 to your favorite charity. It's an illegal claim.

            2. Our double guarantee is explicit: 30 days refund for any reason (or no reason at all). Second, if you follow our directions for 60 days and you haven't gotten significantly high in the rankings, you can get a refund. There is no 6 month guarantee.

            3. All WordPress plugins are finicky. Our software remote posts to the WordPress site. If you used a theme or a plugin that blocks this functionality, no remote software can possibly work. That's why we supply themes and a list of approved plugins. In the past year, I've logged into hundreds - possibly thousands - of Blog Curation sites. My mind is boggled by the number of insane pluggins I'd see. Most of them, spammy WSO crap designed to get traffic, shoot out links to other sites, get links from SPAM sites, you name it.

Every single time someone submitted a problem, either tech support or I would solve the problem.

I recall one or two instances where someone's computer would not allow them to remotely post. And there were cases where their web hosting service did not allow remote posting as a security measure.

But the software issue is a distraction: CURATION is the important part. The software is a DISTRACTION. My DogingtonPost site is built and curated without any software.

I have subsequently taught how to curate from an iPad and even an iPhone.

We do not unsubscribe anyone from lists unless they fail to make a payment. If you were unsubscribed, it may have been your email service or you may have accidentally unsubscribed. It doesn't make sense to unsubscribe a customer.

Finally, I get tons of support requests here and in private messages on Facebook. I did not recognize your name from this thread.

            I apologize.

If you will again send me a PM and mention this thread, I will do a video critique of your site and post it here.

Curation still works every single day of the week.

My biggest mistake was not monetizing my sites much sooner. The Dogington Post is starting to make decent money and people are paying us to advertise their sites and programs. We just did some CPA work and made $40 just this morning. The site is not generating about $1500 a month and the goal is to get it up to $10,000 a month within the year.

I learned a lot from the Dogington Post site and I'm doing some updates for BlogCuration on Monday.

JJones, if you'll PM me your address, I'll make sure you get a link to the webinar.

            Harlan,

This is the coolest thing I've seen a product owner do yet...much respect!

In response to Steve. I've been a full-time blogger for 5+ years. I'm currently learning curation from another teacher (other than Harlan). My sneaking suspicion is that the methods are very similar to what Harlan teaches.

For me...my first posts took about 45 minutes, then after a few weeks I was averaging 15 minutes per post. Within a few months I was down to 5 minutes per post.

It is a learned skill to create quality posts in 5 minutes, but it can happen. You just have to really focus.

...but WAY easier than writing long-form posts. I have 300+ long form posts on my fitness blog that took 4-5 hours per post. I'm not sure I'd ever do that again. It helped make me an authority in my niche, but it was HARD, HARD work.

              Of course they are.

              People copy from the best!

There are some 30 or 40 different methods of curation.

              Our friend is using one.

              Boring.

Good curation is always exciting to read.

I assume his methods can be used with content curation software like Curationsoft right?
I mainly use Curationsoft and I am pretty satisifed with the results because I can create a decent looking page within minutes. Will these different methods of content curation mentioned here allow me to create content at a quicker pace or are they focused more towards creating quality content and demand more time? And do they require using other third party tools as well?
