Twitter is testing disappearing tweets in Brazil

And they're called "fleets". In a report by The Verge, the microblogging social media site is currently testing fleets - tweets which appear in a separate timeline, and disappear after 24 hours.



Mo Aladham, Twitter product manager explains:

"Twitter is for having conversations about what you care about. But, some of you tell us that you're uncomfortable to tweet because tweets are public, feel permanent, and have public counts (retweets and likes). We want to make it possible for you to have conversations in new ways with less pressure and more control, beyond tweets and direct messages. That's why starting today in Brazil, we're testing fleets, a new way to start conversations from your fleeting thoughts."


To post a fleet, a user taps on a plus button that appears on a new row of disappearing posts on top of the Twitter timeline. Then, users can pretty much do Twitter functions - type up to 28 characters, or add photos, GIFs, or videos. Once they hit post, the fleet will show as a rank of side-scrolling posts similar to the story features of Snapchat and Instagram.

While it's currently in testing in Brazil, I expect Twitter to roll this out perhaps by Q3 this year. What do you think?

    Sounds like their version of Instagram Stories and Snapchat. I'm not sure what its utility would be on the Twitter platform but it would be interesting to see what the uptake would be...
