Bare Minimum Reqmts When Using Paypal for Processing

A thread from a few days ago discussing the merits of using PP vs. other payment processors was closed.

I don't know why it was closed, but really felt that the arguments given (both pro and con) were either unsubstantiated, or (at the very least) inconclusive.

The OP began by citing a split test that he had run, but assumed that testing one sales page that offered payment by Paypal, and another that offered payment by a 3rd part CC service, was sufficient evidence to choose one over the other.

He did NOT provide the actual sales page URL's so that readers could evaluate whether it was only the payment processor that was being tested.

For instance, the payment button itself could cause a substantial difference in conversion stats. From the number of requests I've seen here and on other forums, with regard to "how" to create a payment button (as well as the typical responses given for those requests), I would guess that a significant number of new merchants use the standard payment button(s) provided by the payment processor.

While I would still buy from a standard Paypal button, I have to tell you seeing it on a sales page, immediately reduces my expectations. Am I alone?

I think that the use of generic payment buttons alone can drastically reduce conversion rates simply because the merchant made no effort to make his/her button unique - to make it stand out.

Regardless of whether you are selling via Paypal or any other payment processor, a generic payment button does nothing to enhance the seller's image.

Use a unique button:

instead of a generic button:

When selling via Paypal :
  • Begin by upgrading your Paypal account to a business account. A personal account has limitations imposed and is the most likely reason that some sellers have reported having their accounts frozen
  • Do NOT restrict payments from buyers with an un-verified address
  • Do NOT restrict foreign currency (i.e. a currency other than that for which you hold in your account)
  • Do NOT restrict payments from other countries
  • Do NOT restrict payments from accounts with no credit card on file with Paypal
  • Do NOT restrict payment by eCheck or German bank transfer

Of course there are many other things that can affect your sales conversion, but I seriously doubt that utilizing Paypal as the payment processor was the only factor. And that, of course, makes the conclusions invalid.
