Combina several youtube videos

Hello

I noticed that some people combine several youtube videos and rebrand and make their own. Is this permitted by youtube? Just wondering..

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I doubt you'd be able to do it and monetize it. That's copyrighted material. Unless of course you got the original poster's permission.

After it gets a certain amount of views and popularity... it would get taken down by youtube - happens all the time BUT as long as its view count and popularity are still low, youtube does not care!

But I m not sure where is it, but I think i have read somewhere that if the video is just a short video extraction, it is fine. Not sure maybe I am wrong..

Depends on the release licence. If the video is released under Creative Commons it's generally OK as long as you stick to the licence terms regarding the derived work. If it's a standard YouTube licence/copyrighted material, it will probably get taken down.

Every public video on Youtube can be used in a playlist. Sprinkle your own videos into the playlists to get views, channel subscribers and clicks.

Learn how to make and promote Youtube playlists and you have access to just about every video on Youtube, legally and ethically. Playlists can and do rank as well as can be listed as "related videos".

You may be referring to the idea of "Fair Use." If so, you need to know that Fair Use is not a blanket license to chop up any video you find and extract the bits that serve you.

You can use small parts of other works (not just videos) for the purpose of commentary, education or satire, and credit must be given to the original source. For example:

      > If you are teaching a course on web design, you can use a screen shot of a website for purposes of critiquing it or using it to illustrate a design principle.

      > If you are writing a true review (as opposed to the faux reviews most affiliates use), you can include short bits to illustrate your commentary.

      > If you're doing a spoof of something, you can borrow heavily from plot, characters, settings, etc. Check out the recent run of "Not Another ________ Movie" movies.

You can get more specific information here.

Many YouTube videos are copyright free and can be edited and rebranded in the built in YouTube editor. You would be surprised at the number of copyright free videos YouTube makes available to anyone.

Are you sure about this? How do we check that copyright free?

Technically, onSubie isn't accurate, but "untechnically" is correct. Since we're discussing legalities and copyrights, we need to be accurate.

Youtube has millions of videos that are released with a CREATIVE COMMONS license. The owner retains copyrights to the video(s), but allow others to use them with attribution.

To find CC videos on Youtube, log into your YT video editor and search by keyword for videos, clicking the "CC" button. Then you can edit the CC videos with some very basic/primitive Youtube editing tools, combine them, etc.

Youtube will then generate any needed attribution(s) automatically, adding small links in your video description that uses CC videos.

The default for Youtube is the "standard license". However, when uploading (or after uploading for that matter) people can select to have a Creative Commons license which means others can use their videos legally and ethically,

Note that once in a while you get someone that's ignorant about CC and will complain that you used their video. But that's really their fault and not your own. They had to take a specific action to issues the CC license for their video.

BTW, Vimeo also has a good selection of videos published using various Creative Commons licensing:

I have seen many compilation videos on Youtube. For instance, where someone would take the 'top 10 funny cat fails of 2014' and splice together 10 funny cat videos into a unique creation. It's possible Youtube would consider these compilations as unique works (of art), simply because they are changed from the original in some way. As for whether or not these compilation videos can be monetized is up to Youtube.

Sorry, but these would not be unique works.Compilations like this would fall under the term "derivative works" and as such are still ruled by copyright laws and YT's TOS.
