I would suggest you to look up for app developers on Odesk or Elance and get in contact with them. Map out your app idea and get a quote and time duration from the developers. Be sure to take your time to check out the ratings, reviews, number of projects/jobs completed and feedback before hiring any developer. And if the developer has positive feedback, good reviews and higher ratings, then you can decide on hiring the developer.

I would first get the idea copyrighted/patent then don't tell anyone!

Get it ready to launch then pitch to investors or self promote it.

Regarding dev work, get them to sign confed agreements

You cannot copyright or patent an idea.

The best you can do is to have them sign an NDA before you share, but that will limit who agrees to work with you.

Can you "prove" to a developer that you can market the product and provide projected sales numbers?

The reason I asked this question is because you can find developers that are willing to do a 50/50 profit split with proven marketers.

I personally do this (I am a developer) if the project feels right and the marketer can prove he or she can and will sell it.

If you don't have the sales experience and numbers to back it, your best bet is to dig deep in your pockets and pay a developer to create it for you and transfer ownership of the code to you.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I know the prices will vary based on the amount of work to develop an app, but is there a general guideline we should look for when getting prices for apps?

Personally, I like the approach of partnering with a developer since it gives them skin in the game and keeps them interested in the product to help improve it and keep it updated.

The best thing to do is to find a model app, then find out who's the developer. Then contact the developer and make an agreement.
