Google Prepares to Take Over the Health / Medical Niche

Google says 5% of all searches are health related and users cannot quickly find useful information in the search results (ironic). So, to the rescue Google has commissioned doctors to prepare content so Dr. Google will now be providing health info to users:

Official Google Blog: A remedy for your health-related questions: health info in the Knowledge Graph

Search Engine Land says this initially covers more than 400 issues and admittedly "speculates" this is to help improve rankings of other sites (LOL. What a hoot as Google takes over yet another category with its own content).

Google Introduces Rich Medical Content Into Knowledge Graph

Bottom line: If you are in the health niche, especially medical issues, if it wasn't hard enough to compete with WebMD you either need to reconsider your strategy or be prepared to be blown out as Google takes over this massive amount of searches with its own content.

For your business strategies you need to pay attention to what is happening. This may open up some opportunities, but for those relying on Adsense clicks, for example, on general health article sites, expect an income drop. For other niches next on Google's radar you need to evaluate if what you are doing makes long-term sense.

Yeah they've had this in the works for a while. Health monitoring and information is the next big step for both Apple, Google & Facebook. That's why we see Apple with their medical ID & so on.

Thanks for the in-depth post on the subject though!

Since longer they are doing this.

They use there info and if they can create a similar product they put it on #1 (or the whole page) in the search results.

Amazon is doing the same with very successful products. If you are google, amazon etc. it's a logic step.

But most people still think that google provides a free search engine just to make people happy.

They also want to get involved in astronomy and engines that could fly in outer space. But I really don't feel uncomfortable with that, because "Google" is rather a collection of companies, not just one.

And tbh I'd rather feel comfortable knowing that a Google-related website is offering me medical help, than SomeRandomMarketingWebsite.com suggesting to read fake reviews and watch fake videos and signup to get a book that would explain to me the 399 ways to stay healthy.

I also think this is a good thing. People shouldn't be relying on Google traffic anyway, there are much better sources of traffic that convert a lot better and are actually scalable. Health information should be reserved for doctors and large institutions, not random people with blogs imho.

No wonder they were so keen to get their hands on everyone's medical records.

    ^ Me too!
Google traffic is ok, but there are sooo many other sources for traffic (not even gonna mention them, we all know them!).
