I have an idea for a Software Product....

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening everyone,

I have this idea to create a software product!

I've been gathering ideas for a while about a potentially profitable software product....but I haven't created a software product yet, so I have a few questions if anyone has any answers... I would very much appreciate it.

1) What requirements are there to create a software product?
2) I'm going to outsource it since I have hardly any knowledge about programming, how much can I expect to pay?
4) How do I know what's possible with the software if I have a lack of knowledge in programming?
5) How can you create software that nobody can copy?
6) Any other general advice/pointers?

Thanks in advance!

You need to put together clear specs regarding VERSION 1

You have to be open to questions from your coder

The price depends on how big or complicated the software is

I suggest you look into SaaS

        RahimaMal,

I hope you realize that no one can tell you with any authority what type of results you're going to have, how much it will cost, how many copies you can sell, etc. It could be anything from zero to millions depending upon you.

I think it best that you spend some time at the free lance web sites and forums and learn about what you want to do. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Learning how to implement sound ideas and then market them effectively is a whole new ball game.

Owning a product to sell is the easy part. You can outsource its creation, or license the product, or employ any number of other strategies in order to have something to sell. But the real challenge is in actually selling whatever it is.

          Hi Steve,

I'll lurk around the outsourcing sites and see what whats going on. Good tip. Thanks

I have outsourced other things, except software. It's like a whole new game.

            Here is my view

            1) What requirements are there to create a software product?

3 things you need to create a software product

software requirement sheet : it will contain all features you need in your software.

business plan :Check the market and proposed business marks

development team : You need a good team which can bring your ideas to reality

            2) I'm going to outsource it since I have hardly any knowledge about programming, how much can I expect to pay?

Do a market research on software development outsourcing ,you can get quote from various freelancing websites .you can make an estimate from these quotes .Do not run for cheapest ,prepare your budget for best quotes .

Ohh you don't have question no 3

            4) How do I know what's possible with the software if I have a lack of knowledge in programming?

software and programming are 2 different thing .You will give your requirement to development team and they will code it.you don't need programming knowledge to write software functional requirements.

            5) How can you create software that nobody can copy?

Technically it is impossible to stop copying ,only you can ask for NDA to your development team so they cannot disclose its coding to outer world

            6) Any other general advice/pointers?

Do a good market research before taking any step because software industry is very competitive

    Hi RahimaMal...

I have developed a mobile app but not software. However I have outsourced quite a bit.

My best answer for you is as follows:

Visit a freelancing website (since they now own the warrior forum I will recommended freelancer.com) and search for software developers.

Review different software developers found and look for:

    Their hourely rate
    Jobs completed
    Customer Reviews
Amount others have paid for similar jobs
    Etc.

Pose your questions and requirements directly to the software developers.

Post your software development job and select the freelancer you see fit from the applicants.

    Much succesd

SAAS is "Software as a service" - basically an ongoing subscription to use a piece of software

    To answer your questions:

    1. This is too general...what do you mean by requirements?

    2. This all depends on the complexity of your software. Could be hundreds, could be thousands. Best thing to do is to post a job listing on Elance or Odesk and set your max budget and see what happens. There might be some programmers who'd be willing to do it within your budget. But then you'd also have to make sure that they're good too and will follow through with the project.

    3. I wouldn't worry about this...explain what you want in your job listing and then after you pick your programmer chat with him/her about it to see what's possible and what's not.

    4. License keys. This will be an extra charge to have implemented but well worth it.

    5. Look around Elance, look at other job descriptions and get ideas from there on how to create yours. Make sure to vet the programmer thoroughly by looking at their ratings, number of gigs they've done, etc.
