I am building a product that contains a video (slides/audio). The file size is 546 MB and was saved as a WAV file on Audacity . When the product is released, is WAV a good way to present this or, should it be an MP3?

Next question: I have tried to convert this to MP3 already and find that the free services that I looked at unable or unwilling, without a fee, to convert it.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Thanks.

  • Audacity cannot convert to MP3 on its own without an additional file.

What you need to do is go here:

Main - MP3 for Audacity(R) - LAME and FFMpeg Libraries for Audacity, the Free and Open Source Audio Editor

    and download the "Lame_v3.99.3_for_Windows.exe" file.

After you install it, you will be able to use Audacity to convert to mp3
    without needing any other software.

As for WAV files, it depends on the customer.

Most people are ok with mp3 files as long as you give them a file that is in high enough quality
in order for your product to sound good.

320kbps is "good" enough. (The average consumer is used to listening to 128kbps or less)

WAV files are better sounding and professionals prefer to work with them.

(some will argue that they can not hear the sound difference, but that is a whole other debate).

However WAV files are a much larger file, therefore it will take longer to download for the customer depending in your final file size.

MP3 files are way smaller, so you made a smart choice in deciding to use them. See if you can get help from LAME: LAME MP3 Encoder It works with Audacity, if that helps.
