If you want to learn just ONE saleable skill, for free, and then sell your 'expertise' I'd suggest looking at simple SEO tricks (i.e. join free webinars hosted by the experts). After a just a couple of face to face sales (say 2 x $100 campaigns for local business clients) you'll have:
1 - got 2 contacts on your marketing list.
2 - got 2 paying customers on your customer list.
3 - potentially, 2 testimonials to use on your new website.
4 - potentially, 2 x referrals to other paying customers.
5 - local credibility when you get results.
6 - a big smile for earning your first $200 for your new business
7 - enough $ to pay for/subscribe to great SEO software, e.g. WebFire to continue your learning and develop your 'expertise'.
8 - confidence in buckets.
9 - motivation to build on the above.

You can pick up other skills (or outsource) as you go.

If you're serious about making money online you'll have to invest something. Even if it's the cost of a domain and hosting.

The most important skill for me is being able to write well. Not just articles but reviews, emails etc. that convert.

Knowing how to create a Wordpress website has also been very useful.

Mindset and thinking like other successful affiliates! You need to have a budget. This is a business and you have to have control and first you just don't have the volume with free traffic unless your able to get on the first page of google but that requires a lot of time and no promises.

Sure someobody just made a good thread on here on leveraging youtube and clickbank which has always worked well. If you have no money I suppose you can start there. It will most likely take you time to make a sale but stick with it and reinvest that money into paid advertising.

There are dozens of different ways you can make money online these days but in the end its all about supply and demand.

The best skill to learn, so that you 'can make money online' is... selling.

Yep. Sales skills.

Yes, they are a set of skills. Yes, anything else that you can learn is just a support to the act of selling. Yes, they can, and absolutely must, be learned.

Sadly, many do not make a serious attempt at it and simply default to whatever brought them online in the first place (eg coders end up coding and wondering why they don't sell much).

I'm absolutely series about this, it has helped me build a very sizeable ecommerce business. If you want to learn how to make money online, learn online selling skills. They are completely portable too.

Hey, you probably could get started using fiverr.com since you don't have to pay to use the website.

Anyway, from my experience the best skills to learn as an Internet entrepreneur is copywriting, how to build traffic, and list building.

All of the Internet success stories have mastered those three skills. Of course, there are other factors such as the chosen niche but, those three seem to be the core skills.

It's a skill that you can master. You were given many good examples above, but if you aren't build for them, it doesn't matter how useful they are.

For example, writing is a great skill to have. But if you can't string together two words, it doesn't matter how useful this skill is - you'll be mediocre at best.

So pick a skill that's not only useful, but also "masterable."

I don't know why only one person said this: but if you were to pick ONE skill to learn and perfect, it'd have to be to learn how to sell - in other words: copywriting. If you know how to write in a way that will make people trip over themselves to buy what you're selling (either your own, or as an affiliate), you'd be way better positioned to make money.

I'm not sure if that answers your question about making money without an investment. Because you'd have to invest in something. Some training, some learning, some books - something.

If you know HTML & CSS, you're well on your way to becoming a good web programmer/designer, just include the most important PHP which is easy to learn if you already know HTML & CSS. There are so many free PHP tutorials around but if you consider a 'paid' one you can find loads of them at udemy.com or you may consider his package. HTML, CSS & PHP are very strong skills to have which is very much in-demand in both internet business/marketing and online freelancing. Together with Javascript, MySQL, jQuery, Wordpress, Twitter Bootstrap and Mobile Apps, you can tremendously increase your intrinsic value as someone like you is in short supply.

From my experience (being a webdesigner in the past) I can say, that you need way more things than just some knowledge in HTML and CSS.

However, learn the BASICS of HTML, CSS and PHP. These are the 3 most important languages on the web. If you had atleast a little experience in that, you can easily modify wordpress themes etc.

Also learn photoshop. Actually the Creative Suite 2 is for free at adbobe.cm and Photoshop CS2 has anything on board, that you need to design banners and logos for your websites. So again, learn the basics.

Dont spend too much time on these things just learn a little of them. Do this by YouTube tutorials, this is the best way to go for since there are many YT tutorials out there and they are free.

So when it comes to skills, these are the things you should atleast have. Dont get me wrong, you can also make money without having them, but having these skills will allways payoff, save you time and money.

The best skill is copywriting. But...

If you want to make good money online, it's in your best interest to put your best foot forward, and invest in some essential things:

- A website
- Autoresponder
- Merchant Account
- Product (if you don't know how to create one)

Or if you want to go with the affiliate route, a website and autoresponder is in your best interest for making money. You can build an easy list, promote your cloaked affiliate link, and wait for sales.

But if you do the affiliate route, join a program where recurring income is included. Otherwise, how will you make up the deficit when you advertise and market for leads? Good luck tho!

The two best skills you can invest in is either sales or marketing.

Sales will help you sell individual products/services which is perfect if you're into selling to the offline crowd.

Marketing tends to do better for selling things like ebooks or video programs which is where the majority of people on WF are into. Generally speaking though, marketing online breaks down into 2 categories:

Traffic
Conversions

Between the two if I had to chose just one I would say spend your time learning about how to get traffic to your website as learning how to increase conversions is something you can do later on when you have money comming in. Traffic is the life blood of any business.

Four skills you need to learn:

Copywriting + getting good in funnel testing + learning sales (working on that myself) + muting the 'I am going to give up' murmurs when nothing is working.

I think marketing and advertising are the most important skills. You can always outsource all the technical stuff. But if you can't get through to the customer, you will never earn any money.

You want to make money? Then you have to sell something. So copywriting, selling in written form, really is essential. I'm more of a programmer and had (still have) a hard time to get clients. I read a bit about copywriting, tried to apply it and it got me a long way. And I'm by no means a copywriter now. And copywriting is in pretty high demand.

And if you have some copywriting skills, you can charge somewhere between $67 to $197 apiece for designing and writing them - on YOUR OWN website.

Everyone is right since you already know HTML and CSS you should be able to earn from that skill. However since your number 1 service then will be to create web pages. In addition to that, you can learn how to SEO and then keep improving and try to add some more skills by learning how to make explainer videos these things can come together and you can make packaged services for doing these services as individual service or add on services.

It is like when you have a client who needs a webpage or a landing page create it and when its done tell them that you can also make an explainer video for them to help promote their product or service then offer the SEO and it goes on.

If you know html and css I would team up with a copywriter and offer to create designs for their clients sales pages.

You might even create a sales page theme that works with WordPress.

I have html and css experience too, and I still haven't found a sales page theme that has a good format and typography.

This is true.

First, you have to throw out any preconceived ideas on
what it means to *earn* money.

A lot of people, espeically people who are used to
earning money slowly can not believe it's remotely
possible to earn $100k a day...easily...consistently...
without over-leveraging.

It's very feasible to earn money very quickly, fast AND
safely in far less time it would take to market, sell and
deal with customers.

You're simply making money with money. You do need
capital to start, but not much ($10 min.) to get your feet
wet and learn how to trade, how to read charts with no
indicators or all that 'mumbo-jumbo' mess on the screen

Don't let anyone tell you what is or isn't possible just
because THEY couldn't pull it off themselves.

Few people will tell you it's possible to join the NFL if
THEY failed at earning a spot on the roster.

They'll begin to tell you how it's rigged, how they got in
the draft at the wrong time, how they're coach got in their
way, etc...but will NOT admit that it's because someone
had a stronger work ethic and are more talented and
skilled then they are in the field.

There are a lot of bitter people who don't want to see
you succeed, and telling you it's not possible to earn
massive returns on your money trading the currency
market...

...when I myself have done it...when I know people
personally who are millionaires, multi-millionaires, who

You miss the part where I said you can START with
$10 min. to *GET YOUR FEET WET*?

I didn't say anything about turning $10 into $100,000

As a beginner becomes comfortable trading, he/she
can *add* more funds to their account to boost their
lot size so they can, in fact, earn $100k a day.

I know two people who do this consistently like it's
nothing. Most people average around only $1k - $2k
a day profit, no overhead. Not sales numbers before
expenses. No payroll. No building expenses. Just pure
profit.

I'm disgraceful, but you're the one swearing at ME
for actually taking small amounts of money to invest
and earning hundreds within weeks.

I didn't respond because I was busy making money
while you were busy criticizing trying to dissuade
folks from looking into a different realm and explore
it for themselves.

Trading in the financial markets is not easy to YOU
because YOU are not profitable doing it.

If after years of being in the markets as you claim,
you should be a multi-millionaire by now if you
know what you're doing.

Am I saying someone who knows nothing about
trading can just jump into the market, start trading
and immediatly get results?

No. But with 3 months of consistent study and
practice doing it the right way, following what
the banks do, understanding price manipulation
and the psychology behind trading, a complete
beginner can make money relatively quickly
compared to wasting 4 - 8 years of his or her life
getting an advanced degree at college or...

...spinning his wheels trying to figure out the
right marketing/sales trick combinations to earn
a buck.

This is a internet marketing forum, so I don't
expect many people have an interest in anything
outside of sales, marketing, etc.

But one thing we do have in common is the
desire to make money quickly and efficiently.

Again, I never implied someone can jump in
the markets not knowing anything and start
making money ASAP. Not how it works. You
would need to practice on demo accounts for
several months until you are consistent and
understand the markets before making the
switch, but it's a very, very small price to pay
to earn what most people here are looking
for daily - $100 a day.
