Hi everyone

I am alii from the middle east, and i've completed an MBA in marketing in which i've studied only three focus courses in marketing :

- IMC
- International Marketing
- & Services marketing

But, after i joined work in the field, i found out that practising marketing is way different than what i've studied. so i did a lot of reading where i discovered that marketing field is very huge and it has many sub areas.

My question here, and it is the reason why i joined this respected forum, what areas you recommend i should focus on nowadays ? i dont want to waste time learning things that are not very valuable.

Thank you in advance.

alii

Are you trying to start an online business or are you just trying to learn practical marketing skills or what?

    Hi Mark

It is actually both. I am starting an online business, as well as i recently have been promoted to be the head of marketing department. plus i'm in the process to start a small ad agency.

But i feel lost in terms of what i should focus on to improve my skills in marketing, and what are the important areas now ?

I am assuming that you are interested in Internet Marketing since you came here, to an IM forum.

With that in mind, learn how to build a list of subscribers, using Aweber or GetResponse.

Learn how to advertise effectively (online and offline) and drive traffic to a squeeze page and build a list of subscribers. Provide useful info to your subscribers and build a relationship with them.

Monetize your list (and your blog or blogs) by signing up as an affiliate on Amazon, ClickBank, Peerfly and other affiliate programs, CPA networks, PPL offers, etc. and promote their offers to your list. Perhaps create your own info product as well if you are so inclined.

Use the search function here on this forum to look up more info about all the things I just mentioned, i.e. driving traffic, squeeze pages, list building, etc.

Good luck on your IM journey !

What you learn in business/marketing school and what you learn from successful direct marketers on WarriorForum is VERY different.

We majorily show you direct response marketing. Which is (in short): how to boost conversion rates, how to get sales, the best way to promote your product, how to sell ANYTHING.

If you go into the offline marketing section in this forum, you will hear alot about how to make cold-calling successful. Which i admit... are pretty good strategies - even though i would never do it.

Business college professors, they majorily teach brand advertising, out-dated SEO tactics, and ugly website design. They give you textbooks to read. Most of them don't know what the heck a Direct Marketing Association magazine is.

Most business professors don't know crap about designing a high quality landing page, or even simpler.... what the "SRDS" is when it comes to direct mail.

But you have to understand. Most college professors make over $100,000/year TEACHING. So why would they care about what works, and what is out-dated? At the end of the day, they have a family to take care of, and for some of them... a mistress to take care of too.

At $100,000/year... would you care about teaching your students about how to get GILLIONS of free traffic using traffic exchanges?

      So true.

It`s like reading 10 books about auto mechanics. Does one become an expert mechanic just by reading those books ? Or having a professor teach you the same things in those books and give you lectures about the material in the textbooks ?

The only way to become an expert auto mechanic is to actually get your hands dirty and work on cars. In addition to what you might learn from the books.

The same thing holds true for almost anything else, such a becoming a locksmith (work on locks with your 2 little hands, day in and day out), carpentry, hair-styling, cake baker, candle-stick maker, Judo, whatever....

The same thing holds true for IM. You have to get in and get your hands dirty, day in and day out, to really learn what gets results. IM is constantly changing as well. Methods I used in 2008 (using MySpace, etc.) would not really work very well today in 2015. Even things I was doing last year, in 2014, I do in a different way or not at all in 2015.

Exactly the practical work & reading a book is too much different. So you need to have the practical knowledge. Nowadays the Web developing, SEO & Graphics design is the best demand-able work. You can work with this kind of products or service. Thanks
