Getting started in something

I posted a while back asking where I should start etc. I was wanting to get started right then, but I started my last semester of school and it ended up taking all my time so wasn't able to "start" anything really. While in school tho I carried around a notebook specifically for internet ideas, and I'd jot down ideas when they came. I have now graduated from school and have started my job (I went to school to be a nurse). So now I have time to relax a little and study other things other than school. I've been reading different things online and some of it has helped and some has not, but I have 2 questions in particular about getting started

1) Do I need a blog? I've heard some say having a blog is good and others say no. I was wanting to build a list, but not sure if I should have a blog, website, or what?

2) I am COMPLETELY new at this, but its something I have wanted to do for a couple of years now, but with school it has gotten put on the back burner. Is the War Room worth the money? Do you think someone that is a complete beginner, no internet marketing experience, no blog experience, or web developing experience could learn by joining the War Room?

PS. Any other tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

It all depends upon your purpose...

    - Do you want to go online to pursue a hobby or to earn money?
    - If you want to start a blog, what niche are you picking? Is it in the medical field, eg.about nursing, or is it something else?
    - Are you going to offer or do something new or be part of the herd?

Since you don't know what you really want, I would suggest you read up and understand the different areas of internet marketing first, eg--

    - affiliate marketing
    - niche marketing
    - membership sites
    - email marketing
    - list building
    - etc.

Try to read topics that interest you on the Warrior Forum. Google said topics for further info.

IM is just one category. But what you will learn here, you can apply to other niches.

Nobody can decide for you except you. Once you have a basic idea what it is you want, then you can start focusing, getting serious, and investing in yourself.

Save yourself a lot of time and heartache: BUILD A LIST!

No website needed, Just use an autoresponder that also has landing pages hosted for you - Email Marketing Software & Autoresponder from GetResponse

After you learn to build a list of a thousand or so emails (monetized with CPA, Amazon or whatever suits the niche you choose) then you should build a website in that niche. Not the website first (putting the cart before the horse).

This is the cheapest and most profitable way to go. After you build many lists you can virtually build any website and make money from it almost immediately.

Wow this thread just made my head spin I can imagine what it does to a beginner!

Make A List! A list of what?

            Proven buyers?

            Freebie seekers?

            High Ticket prospects?

            Affiliates?

            Solo Ads list?

Yes you want a list but first you want to know what you will be most comfortable doing with that list in the future?

Some people only make videos and build their list that way..

Some get high end leads from facebook and twitter.

Will you be recommending Webinars to them?

Do you know the difference between a good headline and bad one?

I do not want to add to the head spinning but you just have to begin narrowing it down.

Commit to being in the IM niche or some other niche you find appealing and know for a fact it can become lucrative if you check that people are indeed making money in it first..

If you created your own Product first you would have a list of proven buyers that would surely buy from you again at the push of an email button if you delivered great value for them the first time.

Can a beginner create a product? Absolutely. I did it and it made me many thousands of dollars and a list of 3000 buyers years ago. Keep in mind a product could be merely a compilation of interviews with experts in a given field.

Then you research how to launch that product and you find out you will need affiliates committed to promoting for you on your launch day to explode your momentum.

They you would have also researched possible upsells and down sells and OTOs and Bonuses like Facebook groups and training webinars.

Everything falls into place but first you have to decide and commit. No scatterbrain.

So yea I am a little biased to Product Creation that creates a buyers list but you have to choose what you are comfortable with.

You could have someone else create a product for you or obtain the rights to one as well.

Of course what ever you choose you need to dive into some background research and find all you can and absorb it. Then begin applying it.

Lists are not all created equal. I have seen owners of small lists at the top of the leader board for Affiliate contests.

You have to build a great relationship with your list and there are many ways to do that.

So its up to you to begin laying the foundation of your list building empire and we are rooting for you. I like your energy so just keep on asking questions and taking action until you achieve your goals.

Congrats on your graduation. I don't know about the War Room (people say it's awesome, never tried it myself), but I will tell you that niche blogging (the review-site model) is undoubtedly the most common way to make money online -- especially with all the products coming out this time of year. It's also common to build a list with this model - like a second income stream for your blog. Some people who find your blog via the search engines will also sign up to your list. You just have to figure out what niche you want to go into (dating, weight loss, toys, fashion, etc.).

First thing first, decide exactly what it is you want to be doing. I know it can be hard to decide this when you don't have any experience, but it is hard to tell someone exactly what to do without having a lengthy conversation at the very least.

Once you have decided on what business model you would like to pursue, then start figuring what you need to learn and what you need to incorporate into that business, for example, would a blog be helpful?

Learn everything you need to be successful with your chosen business model, implement it, get successful and then pay someone else to do it so you can grow.

      and BUILD A LIST

      Hope that helps slightly

This is some advise l give to all newbie's

A lot of newbie's will have high expectations of earning a lot of money fast from the internet. They have the mind-set of believing that success will come easy. This will usually not happen, and they will end up getting frustrated and quit.

Fail to take action. Surprisingly many people in Internet Marketing have the mind-set that they don't need to take massive action or work hard in order to succeed. You might not want to hear this but I'm going to have to tell you that there is NO magic button that is going to generate tons of cash. You can earn a lot of money from having your own internet business but you must be willing to put in the work to achieve this.

Newbie's keep buying product after product related to web marketing.(Looking for the magic button program) have you ever noticed that when you buy one product related to internet marketing, a few days later there always seems to be some "next big thing" that you absolutely MUST have... and then another one... The end result being failure.

As the comments mention above Darcy building a list is the way forward, don't keep on jumping from one technique to another to try and earn a few quid (dollars) online

    Hi Darcey,

    Congratulation on your graduation.

Whether you need a blog, squeeze page for list building or website would really depend on what you want to do. There are many different techniques for earning an income on the internet, and i'm sure you've already read about them as you browsed the forum.

My advise for you to getting started would be to actually create a plan and timeline for yourself. Sounds like you are bad a keeping yourself on track for your goals so that will help focus yourself on what you need to do.

As for your lack of experience, you don't need to worry about that. I started without knowing anything as well. The only skill you will ever need to reply on is your ability to know how to use google search.

Read up about several different methods, take a pick and stick to it. All the best!

I'm not so sure about the War Room. I consider myself lucky that I joined when it was a one-time fee, instead of annual...It might be worth what they're charging now, but it's all about perspective. (In my case, I HAD to join; otherwise, curiosity would've gotten the best of me...LOL)

You can search WF for various techniques such as:
    Affiliate Marketing
    Creating a product
    List Building
    Blogging
    Traffic
    Etc....
and find out the basics yourself.

IMO it basically boils down to: Choose the niche, research the need, create a landing page, offer a product on the page, drive traffic to it, capture email addresses to continue to sell to them (via an email list). That can all be researched here (on the free section), too.

Basically, keep it simple. You'll see 1,000 different methods thrown at you at once, and it can be tempting to go off in all of them, like I've tried to do at one point or another. It's only since I simplified it and stayed focused on ONE path that I have started to make any traction.

      Everything Jen said.

DON'T do what many do - they think they'll try one thing for a while, it doesn't pan out, then they hear about another way to make money, so they buy that, then that doesn't work, so they try something else, etc. etc.

Before you know it, months or years have past and no money has been made.

The absolute best way to make money online, and a lot of it, is to build a list in a particular niche, then sell to that list over and over again.

BTW, that's the business model that ALL successful businesses follow, not just online. They find a need. Think about it. Pizza Hut, do they sell to the same customers over and over? Yes. Every business does this and you should too.

They get traffic to view their offer, get people to buy, put them on a list, and keep selling to them over and over again. This business model is as old as business itself. Trust me, do this and nothing else, and stick with it!

A blog is a tool, even if you don't blog often. Even if you're just using a squeeze page. People want to know that you're legit. If you have a one page website (a squeeze page and nothing else) you appear as if you don't have a real business for anyone who wants to know more about you.

      Darcey,

Welcome to the forum and Internet marketing.

There are a lot of different motivations for people to look into Internet marketing. Some think it's the magic solution to their income desires, others want a work-at-home "job" that will allow them to tend kids at the same time, some want to supplement their day job, and others find it a way to extend the reach of their brick and mortar business. Of course there are many many more reasons for coming online.

If you have a profit motive (some folks don't - they're simply interest in creative expression, keeping their extended family up-to-date, or enjoying a hobby with others) then there is an order to starting an eventual money making effort online.

First, set the ground rules for what you want to do. Make a list - it will keep you on track. Here is just a sample:
      1. I can spend 10 hours a week on my Internet business
      2. I would like to eventually earn $3,000/month in my business
      3. I want this to be a solo business - no partners or employees
      4. I want to take two weeks off at Christmas and a month off in the summer
      5. I have $200 to use as seed capital to get started
      6. I enjoy writing, I don't enjoy cold calling, I don't want to spend a lot of time answering customers support emails, I am not technically inclined, but I do know my way around Facebook and Twitter
      7. I want a business that will be an asset someday so that I can sell it for cash when I decide to move on to something else
Next, you need to identify a market that you want to be involved with. You may or may not already know what that is. Regardless, I would suggest you inventory your skills, education, past work experience, hobbies, passions, and those things that others who know you would say you do very well. You can also choose something that you would like to learn how to do. The point of this exercise is to find something that gives you an advantage over others, something where you know the language or jargon, something that holds your attention, or something that you can speak about with some authority because you've done it.

Next comes some market research to see if the topic you've chosen is a viable market and one where the participants spend their money. You're proving that what you're getting into is worthy of your time and effort and that it will return an acceptable profit to you. Market research will also tell you where there are holes or gaps in the present marketplace which are opportunities for new businesses. It will tell you who your competitors are, what they are offering to the marketplace, where your prospects are found, and what problems/needs/desires those in the market are currently experiencing.

This should help you to get started. When you get to this point you will know, based on your topic and potential business model, if you need a blog or some other type of web site. You will know if you need to create or find a product or if setting up a service better meets the needs of your prospects. You will know if you need the War Room or not to help you in entering your niche. You will actually be way ahead of all the IMers that randomly pick a product and try to sell it without having done any exploration into their market.

I hope you do well in your nursing and IM careers.

This ^^^^^^ is a valuable lesson.

When you think about the market and niche you want to be in and the value you can give - the above description and outline that Steve has provided is an example you should look to to see if you belong in that Market/Niche.

If you don't care enough to write or research well thought out examples and solutions as in depth and detailed as the example above for your prospective customers then you may not be suited for that niche.

If you are referring to CMS, then any CMS will do. it isn't the CMS that has any impact on your list building. It is rather your implementation of it within your overall blog strategy.

Wordpress makes it as easy as a newsletter sign-up plugin but it is up to you how you will run it. If you use an auto-responder, a few of them offer plugins or code that you can install in your blog to produce a form to facilitate sign-ups.

How you get traffic to your blog and then convert them through your form sign-up (list) is up to you - that's the science and skill of List Building.

    Darcey,

    Congratulations!

Let me give you a couple of words of advice that was given to me when I first started out. "Stay Focused".

Don't jump from one thing to the next thinking the new thing is better. PIck a niche and stick to it and see it through. That was some of the best advice I ever got.

I think I'm a little confused on the list making lol. So I create and landing page for people to go to, I offer something of value to them so they'll sign up, ok that's about all I know as far as List building. So a few questions

    1) Things I offer - I was thinking I'd offer info related to my niche like say for instance - training tips/videos. I was wanting to create a membership blog/website. People sign up, they can see my blog and then from my blog there is a website with a forum. I also thought about maybe offering a free gift every 4 months or something. How does this sound?

    2) What services should I use? I've seen wordpress mentioned, and then aweber??? and mailchimp maybe? (I think that's what it was called?) So I'm wondering what would be the best things for me to use?

People sign up, they can see my blog and then from my blog there is a website with a forum. I also thought about maybe offering a free gift every 4 months or something. How does this sound?

      2) What services should I use? I've seen wordpress mentioned, and then aweber??? and mailchimp maybe? (I think that's what it was called?) So I'm wondering what would be the best things for me to use?
You are getting confused because you are trying to take in all this great info but don't really understand what is being said.
Wordpress is a blogging platform (ideal for blogs, websites etc) so you could use this if you decide to have a website/blog on your own domain name and hosting.
Aweber and mailchimp (amongst others) are autoresponders which you will definitely need to have if you are going to build your list.
With regard to your idea of a membership site, this takes a lot of work and needs excellent content if you are going to charge a monthly fee (recurring income) and I feel that this could possibly be an idea for you in the future once you have the basics.
Don't try ro run before you can walk. Time and patience. Be yourself. Work hard.

OK. Two years from now. What exactly does the ending goal look like?

Can you "see" it in finished detail? What would be the very last thing you have to do for it to be "done"?

What would you have to do before that? And before that?

IF you truly have a vision of what you want, and you work backwards from the completed project to today, your confusion drops by the wayside, you now KNOW what you have to do in a step by step fashion, much like you had a "blueprint" for your nursing degree.

The school you attended laid out a plan of action for you, you followed it, and BOOM, now you are working. Use their blueprint, create you own curriculum based on what "results" (degree) you want in two years, see?

Start at the end, then work your way back to the "must take" courses, the foundation of your new career has to be built on the basics. YOU want to jump to advanced courses of study, but you need to stop and get solid footing, or you could be building sandcastles which could be washed away with the next google adjustment, as has happened to many Warriors.

So the beginning is: WHAT DO YOU WANT? WHY?

And what is the clear "diploma" at the end of your studies? Nothing says you can't get paid while learning, just like many college students take on part-time jobs to assist their education...you can be earning a little while learning a lot.

          Good luck,

          gjabiz

PS. No on the war room for now, my opinion is, it will only add to your confusion.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to the drawing board so I can write down some clear goals and make me a blueprint now. I didn't think of working backwards from the end goal, makes sense to do that for sure though. Thank you again!

Probably the best and fastest way to build a good list is to run FB ads. Depending on what niche you are going into you should be able to build a list that will buy your products and others that you promote.

You may want to invest in some premium priced training to get the best results with FB ads. Brian Moran has some great training on FB ads, it is expensive but what you spend on that training will save you way more on ads and cut your learning curve dramatically. Plus he updates it regularly when FB changes anything.

The most important thing in running any paid ads is to be able to break even or make a little profit up front. If you can do that you will practically guarantee your success. Even if it costs you a few bucks up front to build a buyers list, you can make that money back in the follow up.

As far as auto responders go they all basically work. I use Aweber myself, but I know plenty of people who use getresponse, constant contact, mailchimp, etc. Just pick one and learn how to use it and you will be fine.

If you're wanting to build a blog or a website wordpress is great because it is very newbie friendly. There is a huge marketplace for WP users and people are always developing great new themes and plugins to help you make money.

I've been in this market for about 6 years now so i think my points will be worth a read . If you want to "start" in internet marketing best way to start is either with no investment or less investment ($20-$150) Yes , that's called less investment , think of a freelancing service you can provide to people and use that funds to market that service you can make some easy cash if the service is of really good value and quality to people.

Congrats on graduation... But school is not finished yet. Remember this... Rome wasn't built in a day; neither is your online business.

To start with, you will need to learn some basic skills. My personal recommendation would be to start reading all you can about list building...

Simultaneously, you will eventually need to know how to build a website. Since WordPress is the easiest way to create a site, I would recommend learning how to use it as well; you'll be surprised how easy it is to get a fully functioning (and good looking) website up and running in hours.

Even if you don't have any real idea what you want o promote, learning how to build a site and build a list are two fundamental skills everyone should master as early as possible.

Those two skills are what I would start with. You can always add more skills later.... So, back to school...

People keep telling you to build a list, build a list. ```that's the least of your worries at the moment . You cant build a list without an audience so thats what you need to do first. So get that site built first with the best content you can provide and updated on a regular basis then think about your list when you have some visitors.

So building a theatre automatically gets you an audience?
I live near one now - totally empty and closed up - nice modern theatre too!

Because even with a theatre you'll need a list to send opening announcements to, coupons and pre-release sales offers.

How to get traffic to that website? Do you not read the thousands of posts on this forum: "got a website - now what?" And "website up now for x years and I still can't make any money - HELP!!!"

Then to learn to get emails? Do you not realize how many thousands of website owners there are with no active mailing list? Obviously not.

Make a website first - that's what "people" think naturally and say in abundance. Wisdom comes in the fall.

I get it, your life revolves around email list but I've never (not once) went to a movie theater because of an email list. A movie theater is usually an impulse buy.

This place just gets sillier each day...

And I have...Movie Time and Fandango...but I guess you will never build a platform like that.

This forum (your silly place), is not based on your life. It is hoped that IM knowledge is offered and not just one's personal lifestyle experiences.

Lol, heaven forbid the public speak.

I'll bet a wooden nickel the average person in the US views movie theaters as an impulse buy & would never sign up for any related email. Granted some movies have cult like followers but that's like shooting fish in a barrel, they'll follow any sequel.

Fandango captures an email even If a person only buys a single ticket in their entire lifetime so that's not a good example on average movie ticket sale. I bet they have a lot of opt-outs within the first month of capturing an email from annoying their traffic.

without a website, either you can use autoresponder landing pages or you can use paid services like leadpages or clickfunnels to build good squeeze pages for building the list.

This is simply an issue of what one should do first: build a blog or build a list.

The OP simply has to choose between them according to his own leanings in relation to the following:

Which takes more time to do?
Which will take longer for me to see results I can live with?
Which will allow me to learn how to target and attract visitors easily and quickly?
Which costs less (time & money) to implement?
Which, if the other were taken away by nature or hackers, would still be able to produce for me?

And a host of other relevant factors that only the OP can feel important enough to consider.

In my estimation, any argument for a Blog first easily supports List Building even more so! But not the other way around.

I guess here's where I'm a little confused with the list making first idea. If I make a landing page and get people to sign up, if there's not a website/blog or whatever first what am I offering? Do I just respond with emails and then once the blog/site etc is up send links to my email list?

You're getting lots of free advice here which is good. I am in the War Room but I joined about 3 years ago. I have not idea what it costs now or what benefit it would be to you.

The one advice I would give you is to be very conservative when it comes to spending your money on IM products especially on WSOs here on the warrior forum. Most stuff that is being sold in the IM niche is not worth the money you are paying for it.

Find out where the money is then reverse engineer your way around that. The problem is that most people make a blog/site about something like dog training or how to tie your shoes but don't ask themselves if these are the most profitable niches they should spend their time at. On the flip side beginners shouldn't be trying to rank for keywords like "credit repair" right off the bat because of the extreme competition for such traffic.

tl;dr Find profitable niches that aren't too competitive then build around that.

for buoilding your list is nought a site with an autoresponder.

To learn you need to read a lot of materials and do practice. War Room is a good way to learn.

Without a second doubt, having a blog is definitely good. And since your aim is to build a list, having a blog would help you more in building the list.

A blog is a way to marketing your business better. So, how can one say "no" to a blog!!!

Find out what you want to start with. I guess at this point of time, you want a way to learn about making money online.

So, if that's the case, and since you are already into nursing, start with a nursing blog, regularly update it and after few articles are there, monetize it. Nursing is a niche with grat potential, so if you can start an authority site in the nursing niche, you can go far.

Blog is good for working on building trust with your readership.

Ultimately yes you want to be building a list and leveraging your marketing efforts.

The blog can bring an added bonus of viral and organic traffic as well if you set it up correctly. Work on your blog for an hour per day and then work on sending traffic to a landing page and work on building your list directly. Then as you create and add content to your blog you can email it to your list thus providing that value and trust building.

Be sure to add a opt in form on your blog as well though because eventually your blog will start to get a lot of other traffic than that of your list already.

    Set a goal and plan

Put a deadline on it as well. Maybe something like 6 months or something.

Go to work and have fun

    Hi Darcey,

Find a coach, right here in the WF.

This is your first step. The right step.

Do not make a mistake of doing it on your own. You will waste a lot of time, money and lost of confidence.

Only a coach can direct you to the right path and optimize your resources.

All the best and take care.
