Finding the right idea (my skills included)

Hi,

it seems I am unable to find the right idea to make money online.

My skills are:
- C# (desktop software development)
- ASP.NET (web development)

What I like:
- Gaming. Primarily MMO-Games

How I made money in the past:
- A forum about private financial stuff (made good money until it got penalized by google - then i sold it)
- An affiliate website for private financial stuff (made only a small amount of money with it)
- A forum about a MMO-Game (made only a small amount of money with it)

Yes, two financial websites - but to be honest I have no clue about this topic - i only picked this topic because of its high revenue.

I have developed and started several other projects without success in the last years. I am pretty demotivated right now.

If you have any ideas how I can monetize my skills and hobby, let me know

Thanks!

Why not hang out at MMO forums?

By interacting with the community on a REGULAR BASIS, you'll be able to CROWDSOURCE project ideas.

Best of all, you'll be basing your time investment on PROVEN DEMAND among your TARGET CONSUMERS.

Compare this with the RIDICULOUS 'Build it and they will come' approach.

    No comparison.

I don't know much about your interests, but gaming seems to me to be a niche you could go in that would be big enough to make money.

Find forums on gaming and browse them, looking for questions or problems people are having. That should give you ideas about products you could create to solve those problems.

Or, go to forums looking for problems, then search Clickbank or other affiliate networks, and look for products about gaming. Then, develop a website or blog, where you address the problems people are having, and refer them to the affiliate products.

      My 2 cents.

I really like this idea but I am still uncertain how to to make the unique selling proposition here. There are already so much forums focusing MMORPGs out there. Maybe some kind of gamification with user rewards!?

You're programming in C#. It's a language for business application (mostly).

With programming, in my opinion, the way to go is:

a.) Get a job as Software Developer / Engineer and earn standard salary.

b.) Create apps (android, iOS) or provide your programming experience as a service.

If you are fluent in C#.NET and you like to programm apps... Mono/Xamarin is the way to go. You can create your apps with C# language and migrate it to Android or iOS.

Otherwise... you need a lot of time reading every "business" forum because everyday people are posting their ideas in it and maybe you could JV with someone as programmer.

Hope I could help you out a little bit.

        Regards,
        Peter
I already got a as a software developer but I want to start a side project to get some extra income. Problem with the app stuff is, that I don't have any ideas what I could develop. And before I don't have the right idea, I don't wanna use Xamarin because its really expensive (the business edition).
Please let me know if you can name any business-forums where people are posting ideas.

What I am saying is you are barking up the wrong tree. WF is a marketer / guru / newbie looking for marketing help forum. You said you're into MMO. Go to an MMO forum (find the biggest one-if you don't know, hire a VA to find out for you) and keep your ear to the ground. Float your ideas by engaging with the crowd and version out your solutions.

That's how you do it. Listening to an unrelated market might lead to you wasting your time, effort, energy, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, sense of possibility and hope. Whatever you do, don't deplete the latter. It's crucial for ANY kind of success.

I used to be interested in gaming as a business but talked myself out of it and glad i did.
The only way I'd know how to make money from gaming is to copy Boogie2988's model.
Have an entertaining Twitch stream and a Very entertaining Youtube show where you do reviews, show the games youre playing, play against other people, etc. You do crazy things on camera in order to get people to keep watching you. And get sponsors like Lootcrate, DXRacer chair company etc, but only have you have a larger audience.
I would setup some local tournaments, or online tournaments people love watching that. Even better if you offer prizes.
Another idea is if you can figure out how to sell those downloadable PSN/XBL memberships.

But much of the audience is teenage boys with no money and its sooo crowded it will take a while. I know of a streamer who made top 8 in major tournament and he streams over 5 hours a day for over a year and and he only has 90 subscribers, which is $3/month. He lists his tips and they are not that great.
So a well known and well liked top 10 player is working around 6 hours a day and making $270/month from it.
Plus with so many people using adblock that means less ad revenue for you.

I'd think you'd be better off doing a blog on C# with some tutorials and write some guides and workbooks and offer them for digital download for a fee.
Thats a more sophisticated crowd with money to spend and can bring you a lot more B2B corporate level opportunities.
Or a financial website but this time do it white hat so it lasts a long time.

Do the gaming as a fun hobby. Unless you think you could make top 10 in a tournament, then by all means do the gaming. But if you cant then just keep it at a fun hobby.
