What's smarter: Backlinking your frontpage or deep inner pages?

I've been wondering about this. I'm using Angela's and PJ's backlinks with great results. I notice though that a lot of my contenders rank quickly for newly released products whereas I have to engage in a new backlink campaign for my new page with said product. So I have a disadvantage, albeit only temporarily. Well, the only thing I can conlude is that they have so many backlinks to their frontpage (main domain) that they automatically rank high for any new page they post.

So wouldn't it be a better strategy to only link to my main page with these packets, regardless of the anchor text? (The most obvious choice for anchor text/keyword for my frontpage is extremely competitive hence I didn't include it in my blacklink campaigns yet) That way everytime I make a new product post it will automatically rank high in google, provided my SEO (title tag) is "perfect". (Which it usually is) This could save me a whole lot of trouble and work. What do you guys think? And what's your own experience?

From a different perspective. On one of my sites I had a great deal of statistical data for my clients. This data was google indexed, relevant, deep index material and in my opinion added nothing to the "pr" or in real terms traffic, to my site. I am sure there are times when deep linking could be signifigant, I think the time's better served in getting them in the front door.

I think it's 80/20. 80% should be focused on the homepage and then 20% should be to interior pages. I think that's the "natural" way a link structure would look like.

Ok, but we're dealing specific prodcut pages here. Obviously you can't put all products and every new one on the homepage. What I'm interested in is if the deeper product pages will naturally rank high in google when the homepage has lots of backlink juice. Does anyone know?

I think focusing on the deep pages is a good investment. It's far more focused and targeted for each keyword, so you can really dial in your content and focus it. That's very hard to do on the front page, because you want to encompass multiple products on the front page. The chances of nailing top spots for multiple things from the front page is hard, but to a deeper page, it's pretty easy.

You do however want to get a good set of base links to the homepage as well.

What is smarter is doing both ..... I disagree with the 80/20 thing but that is my opinion ... You should be building just as many backlinks to the inner pages as you do the main page.

It is really a bad idea to build 200 backlinks to the main page and then only build 40 to the inner pages, This makes no sense at all.. Why would you not build 200 to the inner pages also. If you have the ability to build backlinks then do it and do it as much as needed to all pages....

Just do not go around spamming sites...

I try to focus my link building around the site as a whole..

Each and every page on your website can be just as valuable as the next, so treat them equally when backlinking. It's always worked well for me this way.

You hit the nail on the head Jay that is exactly how I treat my sites. I use the main site for my main keywords. "The hard keywords" and then I use the inner pages for the long tail keywords. So, my inner pages start getting traffic faster than my main page. But, once I start building links to the main page and on the interior of the site I quickly rank highly for the hard keywords. Which ultimately drives a ton of traffic.

      Talk soon,

I agree with Jay on this also.

Think of your inner pages as being separate homepages for the products and services that you are promoting or the keywords that you want to get ranked high for.

This is one of the best fundamental marketing strategies that you could use for a mini site or a content site.

I know this works because I continually develop sites where I target all my inner pages using deep linking strategies and one site in particular after 10 years it still holds number one positions in Google for extremely competitive keywords.

Another site of mine holds number one position in Google for one of the highest gravity products in ClickBank after just a year

      Do it, it works.

I also agree with Jay and the others in deep linking. I works to get direct
traffic to the inner pages and helps increase PR in the big G.

I found this little tool that is supposed to show you how page rank juice is
        spread via linking. PageRank Decoder

I'm not sure of how accurate it is but it was fun to play with for a while
        and dream...lol

  • Give eevrything as much links as they need to get to the first page. You can also build some link wheels in your website. Less important pages with a link to the most important pages.
