Starting from scratch

Hi everybody! In a few months, after working 17 years in the same place, I will loose my job. So I must find something else.

After reading a few blog posts and listening to podcasts, I decided to jump in the Passive Income world. The thing is that I don't really know how to find a niche that will provide enough income and I dont know where to start.

I am a physical geographer with an interest in geomorphology, wildlife and ecosystems. I actually work as a naturalist and my job involve a lot of public speaking with small and larger groups and also guided tours.

I love watching wildlife, doing outdoor sports, exploring coral reefs while I am snorkeling in the south. I also love reading and I would like to write a book, probably a novel eventually. I have a few ideas in mind. I also like learning more about nature, world war II history, wargaming and model railroading.

My first language is french but I understand and speak english very well. I am also a good writer in french.

A few people already told me that I love explaining things to people and it's true. I love taking difficult notions and make them easy to understand for everybody. A little but like a teacher.
In the past, I have suffered from shyness, social anxiety and bullying but I overcome those obstacles. Maybe there is something there that could have potential?

If you can help me find an idea or tell me where to start I would greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks for your help

    How about translation?

Niche it down if you can...one of the most lucrative translation jobs I saw was the translation of a French helicopter manual to English a friend did. He made mid five figures in a couple weeks doing that following a crash in Asia and they needed it for the investigation.

Of course, he had to have both the language AND technical knowledge to do it. That double degree in business & engineering sure helped.

Can you do something like that?

The more you niche, the more you'll earn.

A service is the quickest way to make money.

Blogging is very inexpensive way to start. There are few way to earn online business, and simple one is to do translation or write blog post in Fiverr.com A small job take 5-10 min for one gig is not much but hey, you need that first step before going big. Freelance, UpWork, any outsource work would be suit for you. But don't forget to create your blog also to get branding. It might be slow but it sure enough you will get better and better in future.

Just an idea, but couldn't you take what you already know (I am a physical geographer with an interest in geomorphology, wildlife and ecosystems.) and do a series of ebooks/video's for kids based on your experiences ......I haven't researched it, but I feel sure there could be a niche in there somewhere for you.

You can get into translating articles/videos. They pay good and it can be done from home online. Another thing you can definitely do is start your own business. You can become an affiliate for a company and make commissions off their products. Now you have the time to make it happen. You have a reason and I can see and feel you have the drive.

If you want flexibility and more earnings, then I'd recommend being an affiliate for a company. It takes time and work, but it's worth it.

The first thing to think about is replacing your income, especially if you have responsibilities to others (spouse, children, etc.). Translation could put you into a lucrative service business in a short time.

Thinking longer term, ecotourism is a fast growing business where your commercial interests might intersect nicely with your real interest. In addition, many hunters and anglers have a real interest in nature beyond simply harvesting fish and game. This could be fertile ground for ebooks and online courses for both adults and youngsters. Lots of affiliate opportunities, especially for physical products.

I've been in a similar situation, and I understand how it can be both exciting and a bit scary. Take things one step at a time, and you should come out smelling like a Rosa.

If I were in your position, I would look for another JOB so that you can keep paying your bills and fulfill your obligations. You can still pursue IM but you will need an 'existing' income to leverage.

In the past, I have suffered from shyness, social anxiety and bullying but I overcome those obstacles. Maybe there is something there that could have potential?
Yes there is great potential in what you have overcome. This is facing your fears instead of letting them determine your limits.
