Lessons learned in my first 12 months of internet marketing

Today I celebrate my 12th month as an internet marketer.

Since I started in October 2015 so many things have happened. Good things and bad things, but mostly good.

When I started I didn't know back then what most of the things are. Yes, it's true that I’ve read a lot and I already thought I knew the most important things.

I was ready to start my journey.

During this year it has been ups and down, but somehow I manage to grow little by little month after month.

I’m sure that my results will not impress most of you because in WF there are many people very experienced (from which I learnt a lot). Thanks guys.

During these last 12 months I made a total of $4,287.34 with a total profit of $3,603.99 (which as a hobby for now, is helping a lot to save money to buy a house)

Well, here are the lessons I learnt during these past 12 months, I hope it helps you, in particular for starters that like me who often struggle at the beginning.

#1) Patience Is A Virtue

Things take some time, it’s difficult to see immediate results.

If you work very hard for few months and then you see there is no reward, you will feel heartbroken.
This is a common feeling for many IMs, I went through that, and sometimes I still feel like this.

But what do I do? I keep pushing, learning, improving, and at some point results will come.

#2) Help People, Don’t Think Of Them Like Money

Let’s be honest, everybody likes money.

But, doesn’t it feel good when you help somebody and this person is thankful to you?

I honestly feel more motivated by a thankful person than by a new referral.

Since I changed my way of thinking, I suffer less and I enjoy more.

So, try to help people and solve their problem, money will come by itself, which leads me to t he next point.

#3) Give Free Stuff

People love free stuff.

Plus, if it’s something useful, something they can use and implement quickly, you will have their attention.
Give free stuff, it can be a book, a report, a video or whatever you think will help your audience.

#4) Start Your Email List ASAP

Isn’t it clear?

#5) Your Time Is Not Free

Analyse, organise and prioritise your tasks. If any task takes more time that what it would cost, outsource. At the beginning, I tried to do all by myself and I wanted to do everything.

I learnt to focus and to do one thing at a time. Then, the next one, and so on.

Following shiny things is very distracting and will consume a lot of time. Decide what are you gonna do and stick with it.

#6) Be Ready To Spend Money

There are certain things that you will need to purchase sooner or later. The sooner you do it, the sooner you will get better results.

WP Themes, lead pages, plugins, VPS, you name it. All these tools that people wait to buy, just waiting to get some income out of our project.

It should be the other way around: you invest in these tools, and then the results will arrive sooner. You are speeding up the process.

#7) Enjoy Your Work

Doing Internet Marketing just for the sake of the money it doesn’t worth in my opinion.

I believe that human beings should do things they like and enjoy. Of course, not all is joy and pleasure, there are also difficult times.

What I’m trying to say is that you should try to enjoy doing IM, because after all this is all about to be happy right?

-----------------------------

That’s pretty much what I wanted to share with you guys. I’m sure I forget a few more things I learnt in my last 12 months but at least that’s a grasp of my personal experience.

Very useful advice, thanks. Did that income originate from the website you have linked to or something else?

    Francisco,

Thank you for your thread, IM experiences, and advice. You are on the right track and should do much greater business in the next 12 months. Keep at it, keep pushing through any barriers or obstacles that you face.

It takes time to get "traction" in any online business. No two businesses are the same so you have to keep working yours until it pays off regardless of the timing to profitability.

I congratulate you on your mindset, persistence, and attitude. Onward and upward!

Your comment is very motivating, somebody with such a big experience like you makes me feel inspired to keep up working on it!

I just wish that in 12 months from today I will create another thread about lessons learned in my second year as an internet marketer.

I'm aware that it takes time to get "traction". However, some businesses take more time than others. A mistake is to believe that all businesses should grow at the same pace.

If you try to replicate a business it might be an error to expect the same results.

Thanks a lot for your kind words! =)

Great post Francisco! You have the right attitude to keep progressively growing your business and your income.

#6... I agree it often works to be ready to spend some money on tools and business improvements. The only caution I would add is to spend your money cautiously and wisely. It is very easy for an inexperienced person to burn through money on a whole variety of things that don't end up actually helping.

    awesome work Francisco!

    Glad you're making progress..

    all good points

however, on the giving away free stuff..

it's true, you need to get leads. but you should also sell some of those digital products...

it was a game changer for me..

I used to just give away decoration printable sets (baby shower niche) in the hopes of generating tons of traffic so that i could make money with adsense ads and by selling ad space..

the real money i made was from testing to see if I could sell those same printable sets..

but like you said, I still give some away to grow my email list.

    all the best,

Patience is absolutely number 1 when trying to build a successful website these days!

I can't tell you how many times I've gotten demoralized over the years at lack of results, and wanted to just call it quits and move to something else. But if you stick with a single targeted goal or niche, you can build success over time.

By learning a little big each day, working towards your goal each day, you can eventually reach that goal in the end. May take more time than you thought, but the end result will be well worth it.

    Good job Francisco,
That last part is so important. You don't necessarily have to be head over heals passionate for the particular Niche that you are in but if you can't enjoy the whole process then you might need to reevaluate why you are in it

Wow! That would be a dream... my wife and I have been "struggling" these last 2 years to save for a house and we are not even near.

So the expectations on getting the money for the house are really high. Plus, I also donate a 10% of my earnings, so the time I'll require to buy my first house will be long.

That's why I put hopes in IM as a resource to achieve this goal. Fingers crossed!

My congratulations with your 12th month! You have come to the best conclusions. I support 'help people and solve their problem, money will come by itself'. Thanks a lot!

All of them are very valid points regarding IM.

I would say you have learned a lot in past 12 months. If I remember correctly I could not understand all of those during my first year in IM. It took more time for me.

I can also confirm, if you follow those points yourself; in no time you can achieve your goal.
    Good luck!

  • #1 is very very important - this will determine how you will go with your goals. In IM, there are NO shortcuts and expect that everything is challenging- there is more room for mistakes but you just have to deal with this and move on. Being successful in internet marketing requires a lot of motivation. The right state of mind is the key. Patience is really a virtue here that can help you achieve your goals.

Patience is truly a virtue. If you're not ready to be patient in internet marketing, then it's best you quit.

You have to take the time to learn and also learn from mistakes along the way.

Proud , you've not given up

Also, it's apparent you have found a system that works for you.

It's time you followed up strongly on another of your tips and that is "Be Ready To Spend Money". This will enable you scale up big time.
