Building niche site..???

Something I'm confused on when building a niche site is, would the site be ABOUT the specific niche you are targeting, or the broad niche/subject? Like for instance, if you wanted to market a product on a solution for a health problem for your cat, would your site be all about that health problem, or would it be all about cats in general with this 'health problem' solution being in it's own category on the site?

A niche is a specific section of a bigger market.

So for example, weight loss is NOT a niche - it's an industry, a market or whatever you want to call it.

However, if you had a blog or a website about how to lose belly fat, then that would be a niche, because you are specifically focused on teaching people burn their belly fat.

Ah, so, say if I was involved in two 'cat' niches, I'd have two separate sites then?

Cats with condition "X" is a sub-niche, Cats health is another niche, Cats themselves as a type of pet is a niche within the overall pet market...

The important question is not so much "is it a niche" as "what level of niche market will allow me to effectively target the most qualified portion of my market".

If you are targeting a specific "cat health condition" then you know exactly who your niche is...so I would start by building a page or set of pages aimed squarely at targeting cat owners who's cats are afflicted with the condition you speak of. Once you branch out and cover other conditions, you can then have one site that can pull in more broad "cat owners health" which you can then offer multiple sub-niche branches and monetise that site on its own.

Start with the specific niche, expand out with other specific niches and tie them together with content around the category...if that makes sense.

You would have it drilled down to your specific niche. That's the whole idea. You don't want to be targeting a broad general term for example.

Jeff has given you an excellent answer - listen to him.

I would just add this: one of the reasons you want to focus on a narrow and specific niche is so that you can build an audience of like minded prospects. These are people that have the same desire, suffer from a common problem(s) that they want to address, or have said that they would be interested in receiving more information on a particular topic.

Why is this important? Here are at least two good reasons:

1- When you publish content on your site, or when you send out an email or newsletter to your list, you can be assured that everyone on the receiving end (i.e. your list or browsers at your site) has an interest in the niche and consequently, your content. Nothing is wasted on non-targeted viewers.

2- When you send out or present an offer to purchase your product (or promote an affiliate link), 100% of the receivers are going to be targeted to what you're trying to sell. This will help you save money when you use paid advertising because nothing is wasted on disinterested viewers.

In a very broad market, you don't get either of these benefits because there will always be people seeing your messages that really have no interest and could care less in the subject.

As Jeff has said so well, start out with one narrow niche of like minded people. Once you get that site rolling and producing for you, you can always branch out and attack another different niche while keeping the first site going. If you do this, it will help to go after a second niche closely related to the first. Why? Because you should get some cross-over subscribers, people from your first list wanting what your second niche is about as well. You will have people who already trust you wanting a second, third . . . product.

    Good luck to you.

You would lose the benefits of the "niche" site if you go too broad. Hence focus on the news, solutions and discussions of raising a healthy cat, nutrition, and health problems of cats.

It would be easier to be an authority site if you narrow your niche and can provide more in-depth discussion and solutions on health problems versus those offered by general cat sites.

A specific niche is better. With the specific niche, you can easily control and target audiences.

When you go narrow, you can understand your customers deeper and know exactly what they need.

Then your message is more focus on them and your efforts are more effective.

Overall you can boost your brand easier.

    Just an opinion,

I would suggest you run a specific niche website. It's better than broad sites. When you run specific niche site you can target your audiences more detail and effective. It's also you have less competitors then you have a chance approach and take care your customer carefully.
    Hope this helps.

Since you are starting up a site, it is best that you start targeting a broader niche so your site would be more flexible. Plus, if you build a broader niche, you can offer more services and products in the long run.
