is my site getting ddos attacks?

i have a wordpress site on digitalocean

i also have a python site on the same droplet in digitalocean

for the past few days, for a few hours a day, the wordpress site has gone down

it always goes down at 20 minutes past the hour, and is back up at 20 minutes past on a later hour.

the python site doesnt go down

does this sound like ddos?

is it likely to be my website that is being targetted, or 'collateral damage'?

does it sound like a problem with the wordpress installation, or something else?

how can i go about sorting this?

Your hosting company's support team should have systems in place to minimize attacks and isolate them.

If your site is going offline as you've described, you could have an issue server-side (which your hosting support should resolve)...or...if it's a security issue, then you may have an outdated plugin, outdated theme, weak security settings, etc...

Have you brought the outtage to the attention of your hosting company?

Was going to say the same thing.

Speak to your hosting company, tell them that you are having these problems and they should be able to let you know whether there are any issues on their side or anything else.

Do you have any site tracking on the site, like google analytics? If not get a site tracker on it and monitor.
If you see a specific direction its coming from, block it.

stick cloudflare on it as a protection but it sounds like a cron job maybe going a bit wrong...

Talk to your host and see what they say...

I have tons of experience dealing with and mitigating DDoS attacks and they are a real pain. There are some things you can purchase "off the shelf" like Akamai, etc. but there are also things you can setup on your web layer.

First you need to make sure it's a true DDoS and not just some runaway script or job that is overloading your server. The easiest way (if you have access to the web logs) is to see if the source IP is all coming from the same IP(s). If you see one or more IP(s) from countries where you normally don't expect traffic then check arin.net for the domain block owners. This will help you track dow the source of the traffic.

Get in touch with your hosting provider and ask them about the issue. It may be a server issue, which will be sorted out by your hosting provider.
