I am setting up my website and would like to offer a free product in exchange for their email address. My website is about healthy eating.

  • Find free ebooks online about healthy eating. These could be recipes, tips, videos, images, etc. You will find that you will have more than enough ebooks to offer about healthy eating. Just do a simple google search. Some of the best packages you will have to pay for. Be sure to keep backend marketing in mind.

It's a good idea, offering free product incentives (I'm assuming it's an ebook?) is a good way to build your email list. Make sure you make it clear why you need their email address, tell them you have a excellent newsletter that they need to subscribe to and you're not a spammer.

One classic mistake people make is choosing a premium based on getting as many email addresses as possible. Makes sense, right? The more people on the list, the more people who might buy my product, etc., right?

    Not necessarily so.

The offer you make to build your list has two main functions: get the people likely to buy what you offer onto the list, and discourage people who have no interest in what you offer but just want the freebie.

A big part of that is what you choose to offer.

Let's look at an extreme example. You product is a monthly subscription service centered around your version of healthy eating.

Scenario A: You offer a $25 gift card drawing each month to be used on Amazon Grocery.

How many people do you think would sign up for your list to learn what you know about healthy eating, and how many just want the gift card? (I'm speaking as the husband of someone who spends her TV time behind a computer screen entering sweepstakes and drawings.)

Scenario B: You offer a one-month free trial for your subscription service, with a monthly drawing for a full year subscription.

Now how many people do you think would sign up just for the giveaway and drawing?

You want your lead magnet (the freebie) to be very attractive to your best prospects, and not attractive, even repulsive, to people who are not interested in anything but adding to the virtual hoarding on their hard drive.

The next question that comes up is 'what do you offer?'

That depends on your customer avatar (the profile of your ideal prospect).

One way to piggyback on already done research is to figure out what periodicals your prospects read. Then contact the advertising or marketing department and ask for their media kit. They'll tell you pretty much exactly who reads their pub, and a lot of demographic/psychographic data you can use to build you avatar.

Another possibility is to contact a list broker and ask for some data cards for lists of people who have already bought similar products via similar means. In the above example, people who have subscribed to Weight Watchers's online service would be one to ask about.

If you have some budget, this is the kind of research you can farm out to a professional researcher. You'd be amazed at what someone who knows what they are doing can accomplish in a few hours.

It is a good idea to give an incentive to all those who subscribe to your website by providing their mail IDs. Since your niche of choice is 'healthy diet' it is better to give an e-book that includes essentially the following three:
    1. A specific healthy diet plan in detail
    2. The benefits of the above plan (including improved quality of life and weight loss)
    3. Testimonials from people who have actually chosen the above plan and have been benefitted by it.

It is alright for you to give away a free e-book from amazon that is about 'healthy diet' but that will only make people come for the e-book. It is possible that when you give what is already available in the market, what you have got to offer will be ignored by many. So in order to make them appreciate your content and work, it is important you give something that would reflect your site and work.
Let the incentive be something really helpful and make them want more from you. Naturally you will have customers who tend to become more 'loyal' to you and that will improve your market value.

You are making an assumption that every person interested in "healthy eating" is trying to lose weight and looking for a diet plan to do so. People become interested in a healthier diet for a variety of reasons. For example, I scan healthy eating content because my wife is a, diabetic, and b, a very picky eater. The last thing she needs is to lose weight. Therefore, a weight loss ebook would have zero appeal.

On the other hand, if the focus of the OP's 'healthy eating' niche IS weight loss, a diet plan with testimonials from actual success stories, or better yet, detailed case studies, would be an excellent premium for subscribing.

That's why you do the research I mentioned. Gotta fit the message to the market, not try to force the market to accept the message.

Allow me to clarify that it is not my assumption that healthy eating and weight loss need to be on the same page even though they happen to be many a time on the same page. "Including improved quality of life and weight loss" that I had mentioned under point no. 2 in parenthesis, needs to be understood as that providing the necessary benefits of the plan to select groups. Its just a suggestion in case you have weight loss in your plan too. Testimonials of people in the group which you target should also help you.
Considering you target healthy eating for Type-1 diabetic patients (Insulin dependent patients), you will categorize them as adults and juveniles and provide your inputs. Similarly you can target necessary groups with Type-2 (non-insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus or Hypothyroidism patients depending on the content of your book. So the idea is that for your target groups you provide beneficial content thus serving all of them in different sections, but market the content as per the need to specific groups. It should help.

Have you decided which ebook(s) you wish to give away? Perhaps you'd like to write your own. Still, as Randall mentioned, there are many free ebooks available in the health and/or cooking niche. Here are some Healthy Eating PLR Ebooks that come with editable Private Label Rights. This just one example. Also consider joining at a site like IDPLR. One time payment. No monthly fees.

After you have decided on your ebooks, I would recommend that you edit them and place ads (preferably banner) for various relevant products that you promote as an affiliate. You can do this with various pdf editors. I use Soda PDF. You would have to pay for this particular program, but it gives you the ability to block any one else from editing your ebook.

Remember that the free product you give is your chance to make a great, a good, or a mediocre first impression.

If you give them something that WOWS them they'll think, "Her paid products must be even more awesome!"

Or you can give them something that they've probable already downloaded from other healthy eating sites and they'll think your paid products are probably rehashed garbage, too.

John made some excellent suggestions on attracting the right prospects.

    Great point Rose,
the best marketers always give away a product (the freebie) that is as good as the product that they are selling - it makes good sense and leads to more sales.

    Best Regards

There's nothing wrong essentially providing People with PLR (etc.) eBooks etc. As long as the info. is of good quality. You will have to go through them and decide if it's good.

The most common freebie is an ebook. It is a good way of generating an email list however understand that though you can get a lot, you won't profit from it unless the ebook is really good. If it can wow your customers, then they will think that the paid product is really good too. If it's mediocre, then they probably will or will not buy. So make sure that the freebie is really, really good that customers will want to buy your products.

Since everyone is giving away an Ebook I would recommend doing something that is a little more multimedia.

Try to create a few short videos explaining healthy eating concepts and market it as a free 7 day video course.

Much higher perceived value and it will probably take you way less time to create.

As already mentioned, try to offer more than a free e-book. That's been pretty much done to death. Perhaps an interactive quiz or something more personal to the individual. Even an infographic of how to store certain foods or what seems to aid certain ailments.

Listen! If you're Offering Free Product and Your Customer subscribes for that than probably he is interested in free things only. Chances are he will never buy anything in the feature. But If you collect email by telling them that this product full version cost and they'll subscribe you. then chances are they can Buy things from you in Future.
I'll hope You understand what I want to Say

Give away a short video course or a workshop about your topic. Free forever and high quality.

You can also give away a free PDF on a specific problem. Not all the problems. Just one very specific on.

Instead of giving a free product why don't yo offer something else, like advice.

If they sign up you promise to give them a meal eating plan based on their lifestyle. Yes, it's a bit more work on your end but you will gain authority in the field of healty eating.
