Keyword domain names & Amazon

I'm sure there are still people out there buying domain names just because of the name but it is senseless. Google has said more times than I can count that the domain name has zero effect on how well a website ranks.

So, assuming you are selling the domain name to someone intelligent enough to know that, a site that actually makes money is always going to sell for far more money than just a domain name.

I agree with what Dave has said. A site that has a proven record of sales will sell for more than those that don't.

A caveat to this.. if the EDM were to be of the caliber of "strollers.com" you might want to have a domain name broker get involved, at the very least look at it.

The domain name has no impact on the rank of your site. So if you sell domain name, you won't have profit in the long run.

While the domain name may not have an effect on SE ranking, that's not the point.

Selling a revenue producing asset is the point.

Once the site is producing revenue, having a good name is better than having a poor one.

Where would you rather put your money?

National Capital Mutual Savings & Loan? Or JoeBob's Bank, Bait, and Drive-Through Beer Emporium?

Thanks to all of you, just what I wanted to hear. I have 220 domain names and will now put each of these to use on a simple affiliate site promoting amazon and possib'y other merchants. If I can generate $1 a day per site I will be a happy old man. Also I will then have an asset which might increase in value over time and maybe something nice to leave the kids.

I agree with them. Selling a domain name doesn't really make sense. As we all know, there is no direct effect when it comes to domain names and website rank. The important thing is content and link building.

You might be ignoring the advertising potential of an EMD. For instance, it's generally acknowledged that a .com extension can give a site more credibility than, say, an .io.

Additionally, as already mentioned, a descriptive name can be much more relevant to a searcher than a some forgettable gobbledygook. More to the point, it is easier to remember an EMD and, if done correctly, will explain to the potential visitor exactly what he or she will find at your site.

The shorter the better. The easier to pronounce the better. And, at least in some circles, the easier it will be to resell if that time ever comes.

I don't have any authoritative insights regarding SEO for EMD, but I do know there are people who will pay $1,000s for them in the right circumstances. While you might not have any shortcuts to ranking on Bing or Google, you can certainly save a lot of money on building a recognizable brand.
