And the way they determine that, is through Backlinks. They look at how many people are linking to a webpage.
Because if people are linking to a page, it must be unique and as a result, they rank you a lot higher.

Your goal should be to earn quality "do follow" backlinks from high ranking pages in your niche. Earn these by merely producing and promoting content worth linking to.

The easiest way to begin with link building is by looking at your competitors.
And see how you can create similar backlinks for the content you've just created so that Google can also see that you're an authority on that keyword. And rank you much higher in the search results.
To start looking at your competitor's backlinks and getting ideas for how you can generate backlinks is quite easy.
Look at each of Top 10 search results for your target keyword on Google and view links for each page using the MOZ SEO Toolbar. To understand how they're getting their backlinks from high authority sites. Are they guest posting? What was the context in which they were referenced? What was the context in which they were linked?
Then you can see what has worked and you can replicate that for yourself. For instance, if it were a guest post, you could reproduce it too.
You could inquire if they would allow writing an article and in the post that you submit, you would add a link back to your site, and you'd have created a backlink that way. Not bad huh?
On the MOZ SEO toolbar, click on links. The number of links you see there is the number of links from around the internet pointing back to that individual web page.
By clicking there will open up the Open Site Explorer. Now you have the full list of the links for this page.
Under "link type," look at the "only follow" links, those are the links that will give you the SEO power for that particular keyword.
In other words, focus on their "Inbound Links" from "Only External" sources to see who has linked to them.
You can also utilize SimilarWeb to uncover competitors marketing strategies you can replicate.
This tool won't show you backlinks for an individual page. It will, however, show information on a website.
Enter one of your competitor's website from the top 10 research results to get a sense in general where they're getting their traffic from.

Locate authoritative links in the tools above and reach out to those sources to sale your latest blog post or product. Of course, you will add your links to these posts as well. Expect only 10% reply rate from these cold emails.
You can also explore for existing non-linked content using Buzzsumo. Contact the owner or author of the article and kindly request them to link back to you if possible.
