...Internet Business or Online Business?

Why did what we do become "marketing" instead of "business"? I've been to plenty of IM conferences but never an IB conference. #showerthought

Because the key to successfully building a 'business' online comes down to marketing and skill set.

Nowadays, presence on the Internet is more effective and important than traditional marketing through BigBoards, offline marketing, etc. The visibility in SERP and website speed load influence hugely on your brand awareness, profitability, and traffic. The success of any company massively depends on online success, online ads, and traffic. It determines, whether the business will exist or not and which results it's going to bring.

They don't always mean the same thing. A brick and mortar business can still use online marketing and not be an online business.

I often hear the terms, online business and internet business. So I'm not sure who "everyone" is.

In this forum we're often talking about how to market our online business so I guess the term internet marketing is used more frequently.

A rose by any other name...

    > The terms Internet Marketing/Online Marketing describe an activity (actually, a group of activities) rather than an entity.

    > Personal opinion, but I think terms like Internet Business/Online Business dredge up images in many peoples' mind of those sleazy "how to get rich on the Internet" scams often presented in fly by night presentations at local hotels.

Back in the day, small business owners worked out of a store front and often they were known for their "business on Main Street" where customers and friends could gather and talk and be "social".

Fast forward to today and often the only interaction that a customer has with a business is through the marketing that's done. It's a shame, really, that more business owners don't engage with their prospects and customers. Marketing is often the link or tie between the owner and his audience.

    Just my opinion, of course.

With "every day People" I just say I'm building a Website (then explain a little bit about it) ... Becuase I think that's something they can "understand."

At heart though -- and what I call myself ― is an Entrepreneur

Big reason is that business totally depend on the marketing whether it's online or offline. Our aim is to promote & marketing the own business not which business we need to develop, so we most of the time discuss about the Marketing ways.

Simply because marketing is the engine of any online business...without marketing you have no business...so we can safely say that if you know how to market a product/service online you have a business..the tech stuff are not difficult to be set up and there are plenty of tools or people that can set them up for us if needed..

    Hi Jana Graff,

What we are doing is helping other businesses market their products or services through internet. So we are helping them with their online (or internet) Marketing.

So you can say that the activity of your online business is online marketing!

    Hope that make sense.

    Best,

Good thought, but they are two different things if you think about it. You have a business, which can be online or a brick or mortar, where you offer solutions, products and services to people where you make your money. Your business can't make money without marketing. When you market your business, it is word of mouth, online or in a newspaper for example. Marketing is advertising your business.

There is a bad stigma related/associated with Online Business and Internet Business. Most people hear the above terms and immediately think Scam or some type of Rip Off Scheme. Internet Marketing sounds more professional and a better Career Term to use.

What is a "business"? Anyone can go online, build a site, upload products, and wait.

But if you wait and nobody is coming to your site, then what's the point of keeping the website "business" that you have?

At the end of the day, it all boils down to marketing. Understand that you are NOT a business owner. You are a marketer first.

They are different terms, but each can be equally effective depending on what you are doing in context. Example, if you have a training program around online marketing specifically then you will get better results targeting that term, if you are marketing virtual support services to online business then obviously that term will work better....all depends on what you are trying to accomplish
